Not to sound heartless, as I love him for everything he gave. However, that's the trade-off for Lambo crashing money and living the dream for a good while. Most of these guys don't get really bad until a couple decades out, and it's great to be honest with your people early so you can work on proactive, therapeutic measures.
Brains and bodies are wrecked forever after a career in the NFL. Hell, most decent college football players suffer physically the rest of their lives due to the trouncing they take on the FB field. My brother was a TE for three years in college and he's having a total hip replacement on his left hip this summer. He also has arthritis in his right ankle and right knee and has a ton of back issues.

50-100 years ago people had shortened lives from coal mines, factories and construction sites and still lived like paupers.
Still a terrible price and sad to think about, but at least he and his family don't have the day to day worries about how they'll pay for this, or make a living after it really sets in.

For older players like you JJ it sounds like they didn't know the level of bad consequences that have been revealed in recent years. At least I had never heard about dementia, CTE & ALS connections. And many of those players were not getting paid the big bucks that players now make.

If anybody feels motivated about this you can hit the donate button on this website. It the the non-profit organization set up by Ditka and Marv Levy a few years ago called Gridiron Greats. They do a lot of good work. There may be other organizations doing this kind of work, but this is the one I know about.
