Tom Compton admits he chose Bears over Falcons,49ers and Lions
Tom Compton is coming to the Chicago Bears to be more than just a backup.
Tom Compton had opportunities elsewhere, but he admitted he chose the Chicago Bears over three other teams.
According to Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times, Compton picked the Bears over the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions.
“Just a chance to compete—that was kinda a big thing, coming out here,” he said. “That’s all I really want, is just a chance to show I can play and hopefully bring some wins to the Bears.”
Compton, who was a sixth-round pick of the Washington Redskins in 2012, spent last season with the Atlanta Falcons and appeared in Super Bowl 51 when right tackle Ryan Schraeder went down with an ankle injury.
After hitting the free-agent market, the Bears acted quickly to sign the young tackle.
The South Dakota product was praised for his quickness and athleticism coming out of college. He has the ability to pull and get to the second level and is flexible to play either left or right tackle. His best spot is is likely on the right side of the line because of his ability as a run-blocker, but he could compete with incumbent left tackle starter Charles Leno.
Compton could have very easily stuck with the NFC Champions but opted to sign with the Bears for an opportunity to compete for a starting job.
