I really like to know why. Are we a competing team this year?
We could make it to the postseason, but I say that every year. The real reason is to have a legitimate target for a new QB that needs to get a good start and get his confidence up. Do you see a better place to put that 5M differential that would have as big an impact?

+1 I wish we not only would have kept Alshon, but also Marty Bennett too. Can you imagine having the new QB behind our decent OL, and throwing the ball to Jeffery/Bennett/White/Howard/Meredith?
Instead we have to hope the rods hold up in White's glass leg this year.
Personally if I had to choose, I rather we just sign him to a long term contract than give him another FT.
With the FT it feels like we're just delaying his departure. Either sign him or not.
But I rather use that extra 17.5 million to buff up our defense when free agency kicks in.
You need to think a little more about this.
First, if you really feel that Jeffery is a risk and that he's overpaid then you do not sign him to a long term deal as that actually could be wasted money.
Second, there's nothing wrong with delaying his departure if you feel he's a health risk or doesn't want to stay in Chicago.
Third, it's very unlikely the Bears are going spend all of their money on FAs this year. They have close to $80M. That means they would still have about $63M left to sign other players and that's still a lot. If you want them to have money left over so it carries over to next year it still wouldn't matter since his tag would be over and that money would be back if you let him walk next year.
We as fans get way too caught up with dollar figures as if it was our money we were spending.

How did we all of a sudden get to the full 17.5M? So at 12.5M you would not sign him? The difference that is under discussion is the 5M difference unless you feel that having our WR group less AJ is a good thing.
And we need offense. I don't see many teams with no points winning games.

actually, isnt' like 14M of AJ money still in that figure, or does 80M include dropping Jeffrey also? It may be 80 +14, but I need to look at how that was built. jeffreys' money might be included because all FA are assumed to be gone?

I'm not exactly sure what the number is but it's plenty to sign all the guys they want in FA along with Jeffery.
Letting Jeffery go would be a big mistake and I say this as someone who was very critical of him in 2015 due to his constant nagging injuries. Pace is in this position because
A) he will be starting or grooming a new QB and needs weapons on offense to give that a better chance of success. B) Kevin White has been a total bust so far. Yeah, I know he's had 2 major injuries but fact remains his unavailability has made him a blown pick at this point who can't be relied upon as even a #2 much less a #1. C) he won't even get a compensatory pick (in 2017) for letting him walk because he has to sign a bunch of FAs here soon.
So....Pace has to take his medicine here and pay the man. It's probably gonna cost more than he likes and more than Jeffery "deserves" after 2 straight disappointing seasons but he has no choice. Just get it done already.
