I'd like to see us resign Alshon Jefferies. The bears have the cap space AND this gives any incoming QB a legit #1 to play with. Marquess Wilson is someone i want back. At 24, he is the second youngest WR on the team and can start outside. He is 6'4" and has put on good 15lbs of weight in his time here but I can see him bouncing out of Chi because of the following: Kevin White, Cameron Meredith and Braverman.
White was drafted to play outside with Alshon, but I've seen a guy that looks totally unready and unfocused. This isn't college and if Kevin can't learn to beat a CB on the sideline with a safety over the top or at least start finding space in NFL zones... well, this isn't college. Being fast isn't good enough. Bears would not be likely to flush a number 1 for Wilson, but imo, even with very limited time active and healthy, Marquess has outplayed this kid.
Meredith has improved over two years, and his exp. at QB shows on every down he plays in. He has a natural read of how he's being defended and finds space to make plays on the ball. Can he be an effective starter? I am not really sure, but he would benefit from a healthy AJ.
Braverman has done what exactly? I think the plan was to push Bellamy and Mariani. 50% accomplished. It is very hard to watch ST play on television, but Bellamy only got Braverman called up 'cause of a horrible TEN game. Braverman could be a great slot guy, he gets in and out of breaks quickly and steals space underneath this way. Still hasn't done it on the field. I'd like this guy to improve and at least be on the practice squad another year but if he can't cover punts and isn't returning kicks I'd bet on Bellamy.
Dream land: Zay Jones. Small school kid, played East Carolina. Super productive. Wins contested balls, has a natural feel for the ball and this means he is in better position/ makes diving grabs. He's 6'1" and 185. That means he needs to be able to play anywhere imo, as he's going to get shut down if he has to stay opposite a good press guy. So, he was asked to do that in the senior bowl and played well everywhere. if you watch his games, you'll see he easily beats zone coverage and understands how to use the sidelines to his advantage. Kid loves the game, which for me is very important because it's not going to be easy all the time (esp. when you transition to nfl from fbs). Plays more powerful than he looks, good concentration but sometimes ball gets in on him and he will bobble.
If the bears resign AJ, draft Jones in the 3rd and bring back White and Meredith you can bet people will get open. I know a lot of people want TE, and I don't hate the idea but forcing people to cover these kind of athletes (esp if you have Jones and Braverman on inside routes) will cause headaches. Not enough CBs on the other team to deal. If this means the bears run out of shotgun more, great. If we draft a QB in the first, he'll be more comfortable there anyway.
I expect we lose Meredith, which i think sucks but then Braverman and Bellamy are safer. If we lose AJ, we lose the best WR on the roster and the best WR in FA. to me, some 50+mil under the cap, that's fucking stupid. But we cut Slauson. Lucking into the BEST pass blocking G in the NFL after the fact doesn't make me any more comfortable with the Slauson move.
