David Fales needs to succeed versus Browns to keep spot on Bears' roster

David Fales is entering his third season in the NFL and has yet to throw a pass in a regular-season game. He’s maintained his role as a depth quarterback with the Bears because of some solid preseason performances that flashed enough upside to keep him around.
The 2016 preseason has been different for the former San Jose State Spartan. He hasn’t attempted a pass in either of the last two games and only has eight attempts on his stat sheet this summer. He completed four of them for 50 yards.
Fales lost ground to Connor Shaw, who prior to his season-ending leg injury looked poised to overtake Brian Hoyer as the Bears’ backup quarterback. Now that Shaw is lost for the year, Fales has a second chance to prove he deserves to be Cutler’s backup.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Fales has been frustrated by his limited opportunities three games into the preseason schedule.
“It’s nothing I can control. All I can worry about is myself, and focus on what I can do and keep trying to get better. It is frustrating. You wanna go out there and play and get an opportunity.”
For Fales to have a real chance at making the final roster, he has to impress coaches with his decision making as well as his command of the huddle. None of the Bears’ quarterbacks have been able to spark the club to a victory this preseason, so winning the game would be a notch in Fales’ belt.
He’ll have a group of motivated receivers to throw to. Cameron Meredith, Josh Bellamy and Daniel Braverman are all still battling for roster spots. It’s possible all three could make the final roster, but that would mean a veteran like Eddie Royal is released or Marquess Wilson is placed on injured reserve.
Fales’ future with the Chicago Bears is very much on the line on September 1 in Cleveland. Some people may believe preseason football is meaningless. Don’t tell that to Fales, whose dream of playing in the NFL could come down to how he plays Thursday night.
