Chicago Bears: Preseason Week 3 Winners and Losers By Erik Lambert - August 24th, 2019
The Chicago Bears finally broke through for their first preseason victory of 2019. Most will remember the game itself for the moment that Andrew Luck decided to retire, but the Bears don’t have time to dwell on such things. They have one game to go before things get serious. In that time they must whittle down their roster from 90 to 43. Head coach Matt Nagy and his staff have some big decisions to make.
Thankfully this game provided much-needed clarity at a number of positions. Including the three Nagy referenced as being big areas of focus: tight end, inside linebacker, and cornerback. There were also some revelations along the offensive line and the edge rusher position. Here are the biggest winners and losers from the action.

Not talking specifically about winners and losers but expanding on what GrizzlyBear said about the secondary looking shaky. My impression was that the coaching staff was specifically looking a guys on the bubble or guys where they needed to make a decision like "can they handle this role".
One of the things I saw was that Daniel was getting the living crap beat out of him by the Colts front 7. I agree than Daniel is not a very good QB (and that we could do better) but he was running for his life on a lot of the snaps. I also saw the same with the secondary. I felt that they were playing all the guys who are likely to get released at the end of PS cut down.
- Chase Daniel still looks awful. Is there any way we can trade for Grier or Brissett? lol
- At this point I really want Nall to make the team, he's earned it for sure.
- James Vaughters and Ian Bunting also deserve a shot.
- I agree with MP, Bullard looks like he's done.
- Good for Pineiro making that 58 yds FG. I guess he's our kicker now.
- Is it just me, or did the secondary look shaky at times?
Bray looked better than Chase. And I'm not just talking about arm strength, but rather he made better decisions under pressure. Chase just seems to panic too often. Bray isn't a good QB either, but in last night's game he looked like he is actually improving a bit. Chase is at his ceiling and it's a low one. Maybe Bray has a bit of a higher ceiling potential. I understand Nagy wanting a veteran backup who is seasoned enough to not crap the bed if pressed into a game due to Mitch getting injured... but honestly I don't see anything good in Chase Daniels game. I just don't.
Eddy P. killed that kick from 58 yards. It was dead-center accurate and would have been good at 65 yards. Pineiro is plenty accurate. He has a cannon for a leg. He is a young player on the way up in the NFL. This is the guy we want kicking in Soldier Field because I don't think the SF weather will faze him. But. But he will miss a few kicks like every kicker does and I hope the fans can get a grip and understand that just because he misses a few, that doesn't make him = Cody Parkey. It just means that there are no NFL players at any position who do not make a few bad plays. The key is to make sure it's just a "few" missed kicks.

Daniels did have pressure. But he just seems to instantly go into a "panic mode" and is about as mobile as a tree stump out there. The guy is just flat bad at QB. It's not just the noodle arm. The game at the NFL level is beyond his skills. He doesn't belong even as a backup. Maybe he'd be a good QB coach or something like that, but as a player, he's just out of his depth. Bray isn't good either. But he does have NFL arm strength, and he made some good throws last night and he made some good decisions with the ball. The int he threw was a Hail Mary that I really don't think was a big deal. If I'm Nagy I'd sure consider bumping Bray up to the #2 guy. If you want Daniels to babysit Mitch, then just let him be the QB room "coach" or whatever, but don't let Chase onto the field in a game if Mitch goes down to injury this year. JMO.

I'm trying really hard not to engage in hot takes but look at the whole picture. Given the roster situation and what we have seen through 3 PS games, this is what I see (the good and bad).
Nall: The kid can play. He's never gonna be a star but I think he deserves a shot at a reserve RB. He can catch and block too. I know deep down he's probably not gonna make the 53 and that's a shame. He's a solid RB4.
Bunting: Needs to make this team. Sowell needs to go away (stupid conversion experiment=epic fail). TE position is now locked down in my mind.
Williams: Same story here. Williams in, Bullard can pack his bags. Keep 5 DLs
Vaughters: Has outplayed Fitts the whole PS. He's either OLB5 or on the practice squad if we only keep 4.
Fitts & Iggy: You normally don't give up on draft picks this early but neither of these guys has shown any reason to believe in them for the future.
Daniel: Good God, he looked awful. If you're a "game manager" backup, that's fine but holding the ball like a deer in the headlights and taking 6 sacks is just plain terrible. Bray was far more decisive and accurate. I know they aren't gonna cut him, but I kinda wish they would.
Bush: Guy has really come into his own. He'd be a starting S right now for 30 other NFL teams. If I were Ryan Pace, I'd be trying hard to extend him ASAP and let Dix walk away next year.
My man Eddie P showing that big leg!! Kid can bomb it!
Lot of fans were a little nervous about Pin. I bet the coaching staff wasn't settled on him yet either, especially as news of Vedvik missing 2 kicks came out.
But, give Eddy credit--he hit 5 for 5 including a 58 yarder that was center cut and had 5 yards distance to spare.
Barring an epic meltdown in PS4, the job is his now.

Well any kicker has bad days. We have to at least give him a chance to prove it. He has obviously shown he can handle the pressure. Shit that is really the only thing you hear about the Bears besides the questions of Trubs being the one.
