Some interesting comments from Brad Biggs yesterday in response to readers comments on the backup QB situation (and a lot of other stuff... I just grabbed these comments on the backup QB situation).

Bears Q&A: Is there a problem with the backup quarterbacks? How many touches will Cordarrelle Patterson get? Plus more kicker questions.
Given Chase Daniel’s contract, could you see the possibility he is cut and Tyler Bray is the backup for this season? Chase’s play has been a roller coaster this preseason. — @austinanhorn
Have you been watching when Bray is in the game? Daniel has been playing with mostly backups, especially on the offensive line, so I don’t know that we’ve gotten a fair evaluation of his play. I do know Bray has looked pretty rough in practice at times, and I don’t think you want to see him in a regular-season game. You’re talking about a significant drop in performance between the two.
Well, my experience covering the Bears for the past 18 seasons makes me unusually qualified to evaluate mediocre quarterback play, particularly by backups, and I can tell you that you can do much worse than Chase Daniel. He was 1-1 as the starter when pressed into action last season. As a general rule, the record of backup quarterbacks isn’t going to be very good. Fortunately, the Bears have a top-flight defense that should keep them in nearly every game and a running game I believe will be significantly better. Sure, a few backup quarterbacks are better than Daniel, but trust me: The Bears have done much worse. You have to keep in mind that when there aren’t 32 good starting quarterbacks, the next 32 aren’t going to inspire a ton of confidence.
A lot of questions about the backup quarterback situation this week, and that’s probably because Daniel and Bray have played a ton so far in the preseason and have two more games to fill with Trubisky not expected to play. Daniel will earn $6 million this season in the final year of his deal. I would be surprised if the Bears want to have that kind of cash and cap space tied up in their No. 2 quarterback next season. One way to avoid that is by signing a backup to a base salary closer to $2 million and including incentives he can hit if he’s forced into action and performs well. So this will be an interesting situation to monitor at the end of the season, but I don’t see the Bears moving on from Daniel right now. And let’s be serious: It’s not like anyone is going to cut loose a quarterback in the next two weeks whom the Bears would want to trust the offense to this season. I’m with you on Bray, but if the coach wants a quarterback with detailed knowledge of the offense, that’s his choice, right?
