1. It will be a few years before we can accurately judge this draft. 2. I agree that it is a bit worrisome to see draft picks dealt away, but hopefully in this case it was justified. 3. On the surface it does appear that Pace connected with players who are a good fit for this team. I hope so anyway. 4. I am definitely feeling good about the roster in general so far under the Nagy/Pace watch. 5. Also, I feel like Pace has assembled the best coaching staff (overall) that I can remember in many years. These coaches seem highly qualified to DEVELOP young players. We have not had an entire coaching staff capable of doing this. I honestly can't remember a time when we had an entire coaching staff that I felt this confident in. What this means is that once Pace brings young guys in, we have the coaching resources to help these guys attain their NFL ceilings. 6. I do like Pace and Nagy's ability to fit players skills into the overall team schemes. I understand fans being upset with Howard being let go, but the team wanted the best possible player fit for the Nagy scheme. This mentality, team-wide, of not being content with "good" instead of relentlessly going after "best" is what I like to see. This is what it takes to sustain winning over the years. Good isn't good enough. Relentlessly pursue best.
Yes, I'm generally a happy camper right now. I am beyond excited about this upcoming season. Hope we curb-stomp the Green Bay Packers right outta the chute in that first game and then go on to own the NFCN Division - every single week, all season long. And no more "one and done" stuff in the playoffs. Not this year. Own the playoff teams too.
. (Just like the Bears were 2 wins for the Packers every year.)
You shut your mouth! Lol
2. I liked this draft, won't commit to "love" yet, but I like it. We might have a OROTY candidate in Montgomery. We might have the steal of the draft in Ridley, especially if he helps by making it easier to part with a big contract WR in the coming seasons. Whyte? He's tough to justify, but I'm not sure I'd 100% commit to Patterson. The Pats let him walk, maybe it's smart to prepared for him to bust. Also, Cohen will likely play a bigger role in the offense, having Whyte for the return game is smart. In addition, Cohen isn't a big guy, might be smart to have a similar type player in case of emergency. Lastly, good bye Mizzell. As far as the two young DBs, I think they are self-explanatory.
Look, I wanna like this draft but unfortunately I do have some mixed feelings.
Montgomery: We needed a RB, we got a RB. Not only does he fit Nagy's style better, he also seems to be a great character w/ a good heart. Now that there seems to be a growing number of scumbags in professional sports, it's nice to have people like him in the locker room. However, I believe we gave up too much. I've never been a fan of trading up. The draft is much more important than FA and if you wanna be successful long term you need those picks. If anything it's always better to trade down.
Ridley: Now this is the first pick I really don't get. We were already stacked at WR. ARob, Gab, Anthoy Miller (who we traded up for), newly signed Patterson and Hall, unproven Wims and yes, even Tanner Gentry. I know he's supposedly a top 50 prospect but there really wasn't a need for another WR.
Shelley: Maybe a little small for my taste but he could be a nice replacement for Callahan. I've heard good things about him. Our new NB maybe?
Whyte: I didn't get this one either. Yes he's fast, yes he's athletic and seems like a good returner. But we already have Cohen and now Patterson. Again, another RB really wasn't a need.
Denmark: I like this pick. Big, strong, great athlete, can play multiple positions.
I just wish Pace would've gotten some front seven help. And even though we have two rookie DBs, our secondary is pretty thin. If one of our starters goes down, we could be in trouble. Same with DL.
Just my two cents.
I wasn't happy with the trade-up either but I've kinda come to understand it. It looks like we will have 2-2nds, 1-4th, 2-5ths, 2-6ths, and 1-7th next year as it stands now. That's still pretty decent so I'm off the ledge on the trade-up. But yeah I'd like to see Ryan Pace drop down in the 2nd next year and pick up even more selections.
Monty seems like a good choice. If you watch the Pace/Nagy presser, they're clearly excited about him and the versatility he brings that Howard didn't. I think we are gonna really like him.
Ridley was a classic value pick. You're right it wasn't a "need" but he was definitely BPA at that point and that's exactly how fans say they want their GM to draft. Between him, Wims, and EHall, its apparent to me that Pace is hedging his bets on Robinson & Gabriel. He wants the ability to cut one of them (prob Gabriel IMO) loose next year if need be due to cap or injury concerns. He now has talent in the pipeline to do that.
Shelley is obviously intended to be Callahan's/Skrine's replacement down the road.
Whyte is the 4th RB/STer/return man. He's kind of a Patterson/Cohen backup in the way Mizzell failed at. Him and Denmark are the type of picks I want my GM making in the 7th round--under the radar, small-school, crazy-athletic freak, swing for the fences, type choices. If their athleticism can be coached into translating onto the NFL field, you just made a major find. If not, then all you've lost is a couple of throwaway picks.

All I'll ask is for someone to explain how a 4th next year is to steep a price if Montgomery is anything close to Hunt. I don't get it, there was zero shot he was going to be there when the Bears picked after there were 3 rbs off the board and he was considered one of the top 3 rbs and had a 2nd round grade.
They were going bpa, and he was bpa its that simple. BUT this type of get will help get the cap situation more balanced in the coming years. IF mitch is the franchise qb Pace/Nagy are hoping for his contract + Macks restructured contract is going to create real issues, Riley will be a replacement for Robinson(who they could possibly trade for another pick). Getting quality WR's also pushes back the scrubs so you don't have a Bellamy popping up b/c of an injury.
My only issue w/Shelley was there seemed to be better Cb's available, other then that I don't have an issue.
He just replaced Mizzel, how is that not a good thing?
Denmark standard 7th rd project.
Def is more stacked then the WR/RB group. I would have liked a DE, but that's all I was worried about in the front 7, and those were mostly long gone by the time the Bears would have picked.
I like but I agree they gave up to much for him . At least Pace has some balls but one day its going to catch up to him when he gets to cute with his trade ups.
I don't hold much stock in what the TV people and writers say. They are never right about anything. If we get 1 starter and 2 contributes out of the entire draft/undrafted class then it will be a good draft. Without a 1st or 2nd, it is hard to expect more than that. Evaluating draft picks is hard. Most people expect them to be stars day 1. The reality is 3 years to determine if it is a good pick.

It think it was a good draft. Got a three down RB, depth at WR/CB. Only pick I shrugged my shoulders at was Whyte but can't really think of what position I would have preferred.
One additional thought. Pace has now surrounded Mitch Trubisky with a lot of supporting talent. Now it's up to Trubs to show what he can do. It used to be the Bears had mediocre talent supporting the QB and also we had crappy OCs and clueless head coaches. This is no longer true. It's all on Trubs now to perform and live up to that lofty draft pick spent on him.

I'm thinking it's an insurance plan. Miller said he played injured last year. What if he's not completely healed, or worse, aggravates his injury this year? Ridley becomes a very important replacement in that case.
