Former Exec Says Bears Eyed a Different QB Before Jay Cutler Trade By Erik Lambert - April 2nd, 2019
April 2nd, 2009 was a rather momentous day in Chicago Bears history. It was the day they pulled off the blockbuster trade for quarterback Jay Cutler. Most know the story by now. Cutler was a Pro Bowler in 2008 for the Denver Broncos. However the team finished a disappointing 8-8. This got longtime head coach Mike Shahana fired, leading to the hiring of Josh McDaniels.
The hotshot New England Patriots offensive coordinator was not impressed with Cutler and made it abundantly clear from their first meeting together. Shocked and disgusted with such treatment, Cutler demanded a trade out of town. The Broncos eventually complied. Chicago sent two 1st round picks, a 3rd round pick, and quarterback Kyle Orton to Denver in exchange for Cutler and a 5th rounder.
The franchise was screwed up and dying a slow horrible death at that point and it really didn't matter who was our QB. Our problems went so much deeper than the QB woes. After 2010 we mostly ended up 3rd or dead last in the NFCN. Cutler was a tease because he did have a lot of raw talent. But he didn't have the mental gears to go along with the talent. I think the franchise had to hit rock bottom like it did in 2017 before things could begin to get better. I'm just thankful we have Pace/Nagy now. You at least feel like we are on the right track.
Honestly, I don't think we would have done any worse back then if we had just gone with Kyle Orton. No, we would not have done any better either. Cassel, Cutler, Orton... whomever - it really didn't matter at that point.

if you cannot draft OL, or WR's it just won't matter; unless you have rare special talent, and even then look at how little Romo got done w/no OL. Look at how much Rogers struggles w/out an OL and WR help.
Cutler over castle but not for 2 1sts Orton and swapping 3rd for a 5th.
I remember the trade well, I remember saying Cutler in chicago without the den ol wrs tes and coach's wasn't that much better then Orton in Chicago with these coaches ol amd wrs that made him worth 2 1sts and Orton. I also remember that was the beggining of the eternal fight with soulman bc he refused to believe Cutler wouldnt be great and that everything else was the problem, players coaches his etc, and always believed the deal heavily favored Chicago.
1 playoff win wasnt worth 1st let alone everything else

We would of most likely been the same if we had Cutler or not but the fanbase wouldn't of been so forgiven of Jay Cutler. I can name even some here who defended Cutler for any reasons and would rather keep him than take a risk with a rookie QB.
Sadly some at around this forum anymore do to personally reasons.
