Strange Free Agency Windfall Gives Chicago Bears a Huge Opportunity By Erik Lambert - March 17, 2019
Something really weird is going on with the 2019 NFL free agent market. Anybody who understands football knows that few position groups are in higher demand than pass rushers. Quarterbacks are the most important of course, but having guys who can put them on the ground is second-most important. One would think all the big names would’ve been scooped up early this year. It hasn’t happened, much to the Chicago Bears good fortune.
ESPN did a recent reshuffling of their top remaining free agents on the market. Three of the names among the top six are former Pro Bowl pass rushers in Justin Houston, Ezekiel Ansah, and Clay Matthews. This doesn’t include two former 1st round picks in Nick Perry and Shane Ray either. It’s a remarkably rich assortment of talent that has yet to find a new team.
I can understand why nobody wants Matthews at this point in his career. I'd be pretty disappointed if the Bears picked him up. He turns 33 soon. He is a shell of what he used to be. The guy ought to retire.
Matthews at a minimum contract and incentives to put a hurt on the packers might get us one good season out of him. 😂😂 Who would you sign? Ray?
I'd pass on Steroid Barbie as he's clearly past his prime. I'd rather take a chance on another Packer--Nick Perry. He's much younger and you have a chance, if he has a good season, to let him walk next year and pocket a comp pick.

Living in Wisconsin I was forced to watch him on a weekly basis and was NOT the least impressed and you are correct. He needs to retire !
Don't have to worry about Matthews coming to the Bears...he just signed a two year deal with the Rams.
I read its 2 years with a max value of $16.75m. Wow that seems pricey for a 33yo OLB past his prime coming off 2 straight unimpressive seasons.
Hate to say it, but I think that will probably price Houston out of reach for us. JH is younger and way better than Steroid Barbie at this point.
Although I'd love to see Houston in navy & orange, kind of don't see that happening anymore and I'd be happy with Nick Perry as a 2nd choice. He's even younger and should be much cheaper on a 1 year/prove-it deal.
Last I read, we had about $16m in cap space left before the O'Donnell signing so prob about $14m now. Need to set aside $5m for the draft class (which will be cheap since we lack any picks before the late-3rd) + a small reserve fund. That leaves roughly $9m left. Perry shouldn't cost more than a few mill and rest can/should be used to extend Whitehair this summer.
