Matt Nagy called arrogant on Packers radio broadcast
1 Comments
Wayne Larrivee has been the radio voice of the Green Bay Packers for quite some time after a stint with the Chicago Bears. During Chicago's victory over the Packers in Week 15, Larrivee was not impressed by Bears head coach Matt Nagy. Larrivee went on to criticize the first-year head coach after a botched trick play occurred. On the play, the Bears had running back Tarik Cohen take the direct snap but he then fumbled the ball in an exchange with fellow running back Jordan Howard. That led to this outburst from the veteran broadcaster.
"More arrogance by Matt Nagy," Larrivee shouted after the fumble. "A trick play. All the tricks in the world and they're foiling the Bears now. Dean Lowry makes the fumble recovery. Now if they can just take it and shove it up you know where!"
Clearly, Larrivee is not the biggest fan of Nagy or the Bears taking down the Packers for the NFC North title. He was then a guest on 670 The Score in Chicago on the McNeil & Parkins Show and ended up doubling down on his comments. Specifically, Larrivee was asked why he called Nagy arrogant.
"Just the calls," Larrivee said. "Where he was doing it, when he was doing it during the game. Why would he do that when he's got a defense that is in total and complete control?"
Larrivee also went on to criticize Nagy's play-calling when he was with the Kansas City Chiefs last year, primarily how Nagy called the game against the Tennessee Titans in the playoffs. He continued to criticize Nagy's offense and made it clear the Bears are relying heavily on their defense to win football games this season.
Larrivee has been the voice of the Packers since 1999 on the Packers Radio Network. He is currently in his 20th season with the team. Prior to that, he had worked as the radio voice of the Bears between 1985 and 1998 on WGN and WMAQ Radio in Chicago. He had previously worked as the play-by-play voice of the Kansas City Chiefs between 1978 and 1984. He was the TV voice of the Chicago Bulls between 1991 and 2008 on WGN-TV and also spent time as the play-by-play voice of the Chicago Cubs, University of Iowa football and University of Missouri basketball. He was replaced by Gary Bender in 1999 before Jeff Joniak took over as the voice of the Bears on the radio in 2001. Joniak and former Bear Tom Thayer have had a two-man booth together since 2003.
Listening to Sunday's broadcast of the game, along with the comments he made on 670 The Score, it is obvious Larrivee is not a fan of Nagy. Maybe Larrivee is just upset the Bears will be playing in the playoffs with the Packers sitting at home come January.
