Chicago Bears Prospect Of The Week: Josh Jackson

Each week until the NFL Draft, we will be looking at one prospect, evaluate and see how that prospect will fit the Chicago Bears. This week’s prospect is strong cornerback Josh Jackson from Iowa.
In this edition of “The Prospect Of The Week” we will be evaluating cornerback, Josh Jackson from Iowa.
The Chicago Bears’ secondary has been one of the team’s greatest improvements this year. It seems like the Bears have their safety duo of the future in Adrian Amos and Eddie Jackson. They also have gotten solid production from Prince Amukamara and Kyle Fuller. As solid as those two have been, both their contracts end this season.
The Bears have to decide whether to re-sign the two cornerbacks. Prince Amukamara if re-signed is a band-aid at best, and Fuller is too inconsistent to be inked long-term. Not to mention, Bryce Callahan’s contract is also up. Ryan Pace may be hesitant to sign the nickel cornerback since his long history of injuries, but signing Callahan back to the team would be wise by Pace, but that still leaves the other two cornerback spots left to be desired. That reason is why drafting Jackson would make sense for this Bears defense.
Jackson has been a true lockdown cornerback for the Hawkeyes this season. He has more interceptions than the entire Chicago Bears defense this year. Intercepting the football has been a consistent issue for a while now. You know its bad when your leading interception leader is Adrian Amos with only one, but back to Jackson.
Josh Jackson also has an outstanding 18 passes defended, but he’s not afraid to defend the running game. He has 47 tackles this year as well. Jackson is a very well-rounded corner and will be a great cornerback at the next level. The only problem I have with Jackson is the scheme they run in Iowa. They typically use zone-coverage, which may be a problem, since Vic Fangio loves man-to-man, but if Fangio remains with the team, with his coaching, Jackson should make a smooth transition.
The closest pro-comparison I have for Josh Jackson is Marcus Peters from the Kansas City Chiefs. They have similar body types with Peters at 6′ and 196 pounds and Jackson at 6’1 at 192 pounds. Those two also are tremendous ball-hawkers who aren’t afraid to hold their own against the run. They also excel in man-to-man coverage but can do well in zone-coverage as well.
