I've been trying to do some critical thinking...
I know.... I know.... Get the women and children off the streets and inside to safety.... board up the windows and stay inside until it blows over.....
I really try hard hard not to imprint my own biases on anything when I make an important decision, but rather try to just look at what I know as the facts and I look at what is known and try to decide what of what I see is important and points to something and what does not. It's not easy with the Bears because I am not knowledgeable in terms of who did what and who influenced what (just the fact that Teddy does not update me on this stuff should be a fire-able offense... but I digress).
I have always liked Pace, but in trying to take as unbiased a look as I can at what has transpired... how can I put this mildly.... We may be screwed.
I think at this point in time, if I am honest with myself, there is more bad than good that has come from Pace. stuff that raises red flags.
First, the good.
1. The man is a hard worker
2. He is extremely dedicated, or at least appears to be
3. Seems to be of high intellect (which has been the major factor in my determining that given time, he will improve)
4. Does a better job at drafting than any of his previous predecessors (but this does nothing in terms of comparing him with the other active GMs)
5. Is not afraid to make bold decisions when he is convinced it is in the best interests of the team (moving up to get Trubisky)
That is about all I could come up with objectively
As far as the bad
1. While he HAS gotten ahead of where he was on talent when he first started, it does not seems like 3 years worth of improvement. Several teams have done more in less time
A. This has more to do with letting good talent go while trying to build the team at the same time. The net is positive, but not as positive as it should be. It feels like we are accelerating hard but the wheels are slipping on wet pavement and we are not getting the full advantage of all the traction we need to move ahead.
2. The FA philosophy (IMO) is a dead end road. Much money has been spent on many bodies and the majority have just been money spent and swept under the carpet. The net... not very good tactician in FA (in terms of designing a FA strategy), and not very good evaluator when it comes to FA talent
3. Just an inexplicable selection of Glennon. His record was not very good. He made comments on not overspending, then spends MUCH more than any other teams to get Glennon. Most people could see that was not going to work. Yet, he pulled the trigger
4. Talks about needing stay patient and stay the course on tough decisions while not bowing to pressure. Then (again IMO) puts together an excellent plan to bring T along and develop him, but then goes against his own philosophy and throws it all away to the detriment of Trubisky
5. Not only goes with Glennon (over Cutler and McCown), but chooses Sanchez to mentor him - veteran so bad that even Fox would not play him instead of a rookie QB who he absolutely hates doing.
6. When things looked like Fox was moving in the wrong direction with the team (and had conflict with Fangio -- still convinced there was something there), he elects to stay with him another year, which has proven bad for the team and himself
Some of the negatives are just blatant. You think "how could he do that?" kind of stuff, which really makes me question whether he has the ability to move forward. It seems like he has good traits, but the results are not forthcoming and some really bad decisions have come from him. It is hard to say how much leeway he had on all those decisions, but certainly no one told him to sign Glennon or Sanchez. He owns some of that stuff and it is ugly.
He is going nowhere this year, but it's almost like I see the trend of bad decisions happening later in his stay here. In other words, as time goes on the trend is for worse decisions. Other than my gut feeling that I like him, I don't have too many objective reasons to say I think we are in good hands.
Please feel free to pick it apart and add or subtract to it or just discuss. I'm curious if people see holes in this or what other opinions might be.
