I desperately want this to work out, and we do get a great coaching staff, and the talent ends up being rock solid. It would be a fairy tale ending to a long draught of having mediocre to downright bad coaching and player talent. Even if it is just a blind luck thing, that would be fine. I am hoping for the best.
AlexM mentioned in the above post about our talent. It made me think (yep I resent the thinking thing too). But it made me think back to those years where we did have absolute studs on the Bears. Multiple studs. Sometimes multiple future Hall of Fame level studs. Man, I was spoiled, and just took it for granted that we would always have some players like that. We do have some exciting players, but it's not like it was back then. Even in the way back days of the 60s and 70s, when the team sucked, we still had guys like Dick Butkus, Gale Sayers, Fortunato, Ditka, Ritchie Pettibone, Rosey Taylor and others. Today it seems like even our best players only get into the Pro Bowl (which is a joke now) as "alternates" when the real guys can't play. I was trying to think today about when was our last 1st team AP All Pro player? Off the top of my head, I can't remember one in years. You'd probably have to go back to the Jerry Angelo years. How sad is that?
I agree the talent is not worse than the coaching, but I do believe we have problems with both. I know it is a "chicken or the egg" thing regarding talent/coaching. But we do have a real talent problem, IMHO. Is it Browns level bad? I don't know. But it is bad (with a few notable exceptions). Us fans want to be in denial about the talent, and that includes me with some of our players. But this season I have been watching a lot of other NFL teams play (can't stomach much of the Bears this season) and it just LEAPS out at you the difference in roster talent. We want to believe that players that don't suck are actually good. Well, there is a difference. And it goes beyond coaching (granted the coaching is our #1 issue). I just don't see the talent.
