I’m not yet at the point you are, MOTM, but I get what you are saying. Let’s put Fox aside for now—we all agree he’s terrible and is a goner.
Pace hired Fox. Don’t give some some sob story about how he didn’t have a choice. Pace is the GM. PACE HIRED FOX.
Pace kept Fox this year. Ditto the above. Grow some balls and do what you think is right or you can’t complain you “didn't have a choice”. PACE KEPT FOX.
Pace has utterly destroyed the offense in his 3 years at the helm. He has failed to find remotely adequate replacements for the Emery-era offensive weapons he discarded. He’s only had one clear offensive success so far—Howard. Nice player and nice find in the 5th but before you give Pace too much credit, consider that Arizona drafted David Johnson only 1 round earlier and he’s twice the player Howard is. Jordan is a fine runner but useless as a receiver so he will never be a complete RB. Beyond him, Pace has utterly ****ed up the offensive skill positions.
Pace completely whiffed on 3 of his first 4 draft picks. That set the rebuild back a full year. We aren’t talking “disappointments” here. We are talking flat out BUSTS.
Pace, outside of Hicks and maybe Trevathan, has completely botched free agency. He has been unable to do in FA what it’s supposed to do—plug holes. Instead he had signed mostly injured and garbage players who’ve quickly been exposed as not worth even their “bargain” values.
Now, I am still willing to give him some more time but my patience is wearing thin. Let’s not forget the above.
When Pace was hired Focks had not yet been let go by Elway so others like Gase and Bowles were high on Pace's list. In fact we've already read that Bowles was his top guy. But they hesitated when other teams were racing one another to sign a HC. Why?
Accorsi knew Focks very well and no one can tell me he wasn't acutely aware of Focks impending availability. Come on. The NFL is a pretty tight knit bunch. Can anyone here say they've never known when someone might be getting fired soon in their own company or another they're familiar with?
We already know Teddy Bears and GMcC had rights of refusal on any HC hire so once it was confirmed Focks was available he became top choice because he fit what Phillips and McCaskey wanted....an experienced HC. Now add Accorsi's vote which then would have carried more weight than Pace's and we know why Focks was hired 3-1 no matter how Pace voted so he being a rookie and all he went along to get along.
Then there's this; "PACE KEPT FOX."
MP, Pace didn't have a choice. Doesn't it stand to reason that if he did not have sole authority to hire a HC without ownership approval he also did not have sole authority to fire one without it either? That's the reality of it brother and we have to accept that. IMHO this is how it works.
Pace controls player personnel and the cap almost exclusively. But he does not control the admin budget exclusively the way a head of football ops might. THAT my friend is still the purview of Phillips and GMcC and the coaching staff is covered by that admin/ops budget Pace does not control.
Following the firing of Emery and Trestman and the need to pay them off for the balance of their deal Phillips and GMcC were not to put themselves on that same 2 year hook again and that's only the money part. Firing 2 HCs after only 2 seasons each would have been highly embarrassing and the McCaskeys hate an embarrassment.
In that way they're a lot like our POTUS in Tweet. They actually are an embarrassment but can't see it themselves. It's why they refuse to believe anyone else could do better. Maybe Ginny won't let them fire Phillips and give control to someone else. I dunno? Maybe once she's gone we'll know.
