I'm with Soul on this one. Everyone is being so forgiving because it didn't end up costing us the game. If it had, the torches and pitchforks would be out right now.
I don't buy for a second that Cooper "thought he was already in". That's a lame excuse and I call BS on that one.. The real reason is that he slowed down to showboat and ended up embarrassing himself.
Something like that better never ever happen again. Run hard through the whistle. You can do your touchdown dance after the play is fully over.
I don't know. People make mistakes. We all make mistakes. I've made big mistakes at work before. I'm glad I wasn't fired. I made a whopper when I was first hired at the job I now have (I've been here 14 years now). I had to go in and tell my boss about the screwup, and I was sweating bullets. The boss wasn't happy, but said, "okay, let's put our heads together and figure out how to fix this" and we did. I ended up being a decent employee though after that (even won some employee recognition awards).
People do dumb things. People make mistakes. We all do.
Cooper will not make that mistake again, and he will be a valuable player for the Bears. He was valuable to us in that game. Without him I don't think we win that game. Yeah, the guy screwed up. Time to move on.
When people make million dollar mistakes other people get upset and rightfully so.
This too shall pass but Cooper made a lethal combination of mistakes that tell me he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer and these are his own words.
1) He didn't "hear" anyone coming up behind him so he slowed down.
2) He seemed to truly believe the 5 yardline was the goal line because he all but stopped around the three.
3) He says it will make him a better man from now on??? WTF
With 60,000 people yelling and cheering why should he be surprised he didn't "hear" anyone. What ever happened to checking your six? A smarter player would have at least glanced back once or twice to at least see where the pursuit was. Did he think Pitt would just shrug and give up? Stupid is as stupid does.
How little situational awareness can a pro football player have than to not realize where the goal line is on a scoring play. That's even more inexcusable than not glancing over his shoulder. There's a big orange pylon at the goal line. How do you miss that? He didn't. It was an excuse to cover the fact that he didn't look back.
A better man? How? Rushing into a burning building to save a child from dying makes you a better man. A failure to fully accept responsibility for being stupid and nearly costing your team the game does not. Fox says Cooper feels bad about it. Well he damn well should feel bad about it and I was his teammate I'd make sure he did.
By my definition a mistake is something accidental. That's forgivable. This was not an accident. This was careless showboating. That's not forgivable. If he was a rookie backup STeamer that alone could well have got him cut on Monday but because he's not and on a guaranteed contract that saves him huh? Bull shit.
I agree it was careless showboating. And I was just as upset as you when it happened, Soul. I about had an aneurysm watching what he did. But I'm fine with just moving on now and hoping the guy can be a valuable player for us moving forward. And honestly I think he will. LOL, I've made more than my share of stupid (and bad) decisions in my life, and maybe it makes me a softie when I see another person make mistakes. We ended up winning the game anyway, partially due to Cooper's good play, outside of this particular screwup. Yeah it was pure dumb. I've been there though myself more times than I care to think about.

Yep. What is it the problem children of DaBears used to post? #nailed it. Was that it?
MP is correct. We lose that game because of Cooper little "mistake" and there is no way in hell anyone here would be all that forgiving. He'd have gotten the deflated football, which by the way did we even award one this week, and there'd be a five or six page long thread about that alone.
We need to stop being so God damn forgiving and understanding of this team, some of it's players, it's HC, it's GM, and it's ownership. We the fans are getting hosed and we have been for years. Let's hear from the former military guys on this one. Don't mistakes in combat or even practice combat get people killed? D, you were a Marine and you call this a mistake. How many mistakes like that is a Marine permitted to make?
This wasn't a simple mistake so let's stop characterizing it as if it was. If he had been running for all he was worth and the ball got stripped well then that's just a great play by Pitt. But that's not what happened. Cooper intentionally slowed to a stroll well short of the end zone and began shagging into the end zone to showboat. He knew he was doing it without even bothering to check his six. That's not a mistake. That's raw carelessness.

If we'd lost the game, some would wrongly blame the Cooper moment. I was over it almost as fast as it happened mainly because if we just erase Cooper being there to recover the ball, we'd all be celebrating the blocked kick. The blocked kick itself was a good enough play. The fact we got three points off of it because Cooper picked it up and ran it down field was bonus material.
I know a lot of pessimistic people who can only see the bad in any given situation are going to dwell on it for some sadistic reason. Clearly Fox, and Rodgers, and Fangio and most importantly Cooper didn't dwell on it. I guess that's what this board is though for some, a whine fest. Blame the team's problems on one play (that was actually good until the end) instead of the 70+ other snaps in the game that could have affected the outcome.
As far as the marines not making mistakes (or being 'raw careless) LMFAO. You are joking right? You don't think Marines make mistakes or are careless? 18 year old kids with guns, surrounded by other 18 year old males with guns and macho attitudes don't make mistakes? HAHAHAHA That's too funny.
Ok now that I'm done laughing, why are we comparing the NFL to the Military? Pretty lost at that comparison.
As far as us fans getting hosed...I choose to watch the Bears and be a Bears fan. I enjoy Bear's football which is why I write on a Bear's forum. I suppose I could get all hardcore and stop watching them and really shake the finger at George and Halas Hall and post on a message board about how riled up I am about the dysfunction. Nah. The football season's too short and I want to enjoy it while it's here. And before you ask, YES, I do enjoy watching the Bears and if I don't like a particular game, I can turn it off not to send hate signals to Halas Hall but because I might rather be doing something else....

So you'd prefer to pretend like maybe it didn't happen so you can be more content with half that play huh?
I give up. Some of you guys aren't true Bears fans. You're fans of some team called the Powdertown Pussy's.
And I think my point about making mistakes in combat or in simulated combat due to raw carelessness is appropriate. Soldiers drill on even the small stuff so mistakes aren't made or at least not routinely. So what part of not running that ball all the way into the end zone has anything do do with being coached to do so. Maybe we should assume the coaches figured he knew that much but apparently he didn't. So to me he's no different than the soldier who blew his foot off because he failed to follow procedures and got careless.
So Belli. Enjoy your Bears games. Me, I enjoy pointing out the stuff that has made this a losing organization for so long. Maybe I just care a little more about that than you do.

Funny you should mention the Marines. Marines make their share of mistakes too. One of my best friends got shot point blank by another marine friend one night (it was a wild night). Blew a hole right through him. It was an accident. We got him to the hospital and he lived. He was pissed the friend shot him but it was just a stupid accident. We found the spent bullet and made a pendant for my friend... he thought that was pretty cool. But the BEST consequence of the whole deal was that my friend gave me his car to drive while he was in the hospital recovering. His car was a super charged '69 or '70 Mustang. Beautiful. We had a guy on the base who thought he had the hottest car but we had a drag race and I blew his doors off with that Mustang. My buddy did heal. None of us got into any real trouble... it was just a wild night. LOL, life is too short to get too worked up over things.
EDIT: My buddy was okay with me racing the guy, even though I had rolled and totaled my wheels a few weeks earlier. Dumb move on my part... it was a beautiful candy apple red 55 Chevy.

Do you enjoy pointing it out to give yourself a sense of control or to make yourself feel smart? That's not meant as a snarky comment, a serious one. As far as you caring more, I don't particularly care if you care more or less about the Bears. I'm a Bear's fan - we both are. That's good enough for me... Again though, this isn't a job for me, it's entertainment and I try to keep it as such.
So you'd prefer to pretend like maybe it didn't happen so you can be more content with half that play huh?

It all depends on the circumstances behind said "wild night" D. You weren't specific about that.
Was this in combat or during on or off base partying? To me, and maybe only to me, that would make a difference.
No one says mistakes don't happen. Not even me and I've made plenty of them. But those that are due to raw carelessness and could have been prevented are not so easily forgiven by me. Carelessness always exacts it's price and people get hurt or die because of it. That's how I am and I make no apologies for that.
However, you all can do as you choose and now I'm done with this. I spoken my piece many times over and I don't need to justify my personal feelings about it anymore than I already have.
Marines make all kinds of mistakes. They're young, dumb and full of cum. History is bursting full of examples of Marines making massive mistakes - REALLY DEEP STUFF and that stuff is always excused as the "What Happens in War." What happens in war is often chaotic and full of dumb mistakes.
Back in the NFL - this is a game - a form of entertainment (DID I MENTION THIS IS A GAME AND NOT WAR?? JUST CHECKING) played by the elitist of the elite athletes in the World. And yet - guess what - they still screw up from time to time. Enjoy it. That's what happens when you're human. I guess we're all so perfect that we can judge the shit out of a player who gets a little eager at the prospect of scoring a touchdown off a blocked punt.
I understand some here wanting to defend Cooper but what he did was no mistake. What he did was an purposeful ego driven showboat that could of cost us the game. He knew what he was doing when he slowed down.
I understand players make mistakes but let's be correct in what should be consider a mistake.
