Don't get me wrong, drafting a QB would be very exciting and I'll be all on board if that's what the Bears do. I'll be able to find things I like about any of the top QBs if the Bears take one and I'll be excited to see them perform. The problem is that I remember going through this before and it makes me really nervous. I guess I feel more comfortable with the best player available with that third pick then getting a QB in the next round. I don't feel like taking a QB in the second round is as big of a hit to the team if it doesn't work out.
Regardless I'm going to be behind almost every pick Pace makes this year because I have faith in him right now. If they take Watson I'll be one of his biggest cheerleaders.
And I'm amazed at the number of posters who claim to understand this but insist that the Bears don't need to take chance at a QB with #3. The thinking seems to be "Lets draft the unique one in a generation elite PB DEF players" (funny how that guy seems to be in the draft every year isn't it) and the Bears can draft that QB later.
Later as in rounds 3-4-5-6-7 or later as in next year.
If Pace doesn't find his QB this year, and he is in prime position to draft one (1st or 2nd round), its back to the same old Bears.
Just because you draft a QB with the third pick doesn't mean you've got your guy. Many of those top QBs were not taken in the top 5. A lot of those SB teams won because they had good coaching with a talented team overall.
I'm curious how many teams drafted their QB in the first round, started them as a rookie and went on to win a SB within 5 years. Below is a list of the top 10 QBs in the last 10 years.
Aaron Rodgers - Sat behind Favre rookie season. Great QB to learn from. Peyton Manning - Started right away and was obviously successful. Drew Brees - Was a late second round pick that didn't start his rookie year. Tom Brady - We all know the story with Tom. He didn't start as a rookie either. Went to the best coached to in the NFL. Ben Roethlesberger - Drafted in first round. Started right away. Went 13-0. Has always been on a pretty good team overall. Philip Rivers - Was the 4th overall pick and played behind Drew Brees his rookie year. Pretty good QB to learn from. Russell Wilson - Third round pick that wasn't forced to start but earned the starting job his rookie year. Drafted by a very good team. Matt Ryan - Drafted third overall and started right away. Tony Romo - He was undrafted and played behind Drew Bledsoe. He learned from a good QB and waited for his opportunity. Eli Manning - First overall pick and started right away. He really hasn't been that great of a QB but gets the job done and is above average. Has always had a good defense.
Brees was the 32nd pick in the draft, he was the first pick in the 2nd round, as close to being a 1st rounder as you can get. But other then that dead on.

Jerry, is that you?
ANgelo always backed from the tough choices. Even though I am convinced that the QB is how we need to go, I am nervous too. i think everyone is. THat is not the right reason not to pick one though.
I don;t have a daughter... just have sons, but I imagine that its' like when your young daughter goes out on her first date. You know it needs to be done. You can't marry her off without meeting her husband (apologies to the cultures that see it otherwise), but you would be crazy not to be really nervous. It has to happen to move forward. And yeah. I'm going to be plenty nervous.

You're right. When I was looking it up I read it as the 32nd pick in the second round when instead he was the 32nd overall player drafted.

Ugh. Don't use that as a comparison. My daughter is 2, I don't want that in my head already.
I'd be less nervous if they were touting a great QB class so that has a lot to do with it.

I think Andrew Luck is a much better QB than Eli Manning and Tony Romo (and I would take him on the Bears over Russell Wilson). His offensive line has been atrocious the last 2 years. He was like Payton the consensus #1 pick that was considered the rare can't miss college QB. Eli Manning throws a lot of picks. He has 215 career picks to Cutlers 146 (they have the same int %). Both Rivers and Rothlesberger were drafted behind Eli #1, #4, #11. But I like your point.

I don't see a QB worthy of the #3 pick in this years draft though there will likely be 1 or 2 maybe even 3 taken up top because of need. Look at first rd drafts of the previous decade. There are drafts that don't have a single QB taken in the 1st rd that turns out to be a solid NFL starter. So in a draft year that doesn't rank a QB among the top talent in the draft it is certainly a risk. I do think they should draft a QB (depending on who is available) with their 2nd rd pick and maybe even jump ahead of the Browns & 49ers if those teams don't draft a QB with their first pick. I think it is imperative they draft a QB within the 1st 4 rounds.
