Injuries can be an excuse but the coaching didn't help us much when we had talent on the field to begin with. When you have a coaching staff who refuses to make adjustments, has terrible clock management, and ain't the best at evaluating talent then why do you still have a job here?
There was no reason why White should of been our #2 WR instead of Meredith. There was no reason why Langford should of been our #1 RB instead of Howard
I agree with 1701, with 19 men on the IR and the on and off injuries we had through the season, I just can't throw all of that on the head coach, and you can't tell me that the excessive injuries weren't a factor. Now, having said that, I can't see giving the HC anything better than a D for all the other variables so aptly pointed out above. It may not all be on him, but considering what we see on the field, the buck has to stop with the HC.
D.
I can't put it all on the head coach either. There are plenty of co-conspirators to take their share of the blame for the failures of the franchise.
I've gotta say what I feel and I know I'll be smacked around for this, but I really think there is some truth in it. I feel like this season was a sacrificial season to the extent they (FO and coaches) can get away with it. In baseball, it's OK, and even expected, to suck for a period of time to get better players for the long run (see the Chicago Cubs); but in football, it's verboten. There are ways, however, to "not try so hard". Some of those ways might be:
1. Not spend all your available cap space in a FA period and save it to allow it to carry over to next year
2. Not be as dynamic in game planning and or play calling
3. Maybe not TRYING to lose on game day, but maybe not trying so hard to win.
4. Maybe like not putting your best people out there at any given time
5. Maybe like putting guys on IR that could potentially play in a few weeks, but what does it hurt to just shut them down now.
There are ways to "not try so hard" without actually trying to lose, and if upper management is fine with that, then you wont get fired at the end of the season, right? Hmmm? Interesting right? Different rules for different sports? SO what do we end up with? We end up with a losing season that really doesn't matter because we wouldn't have made the playoffs even if everyone had stayed healthy, but we do end up with a top 3 pick in each round of the draft and a shitload of money and cap space for FA. By losing this badly, we can potentially turn the ship around a lot faster than if we had ended up 8-8.
Except players whose livelihood depends on production across the board would never agree to this. Word would spread that the Bears were willing to play games with careers of current players for future teams. Something like this would never be kept a secret, it would leak. How does Travethan think about this team now? Did he just ruin his knee for a team whose coaches were trying to not win games? McPhee called out Cutler for not trying and seems to be a speak his mind kind of guy. No possible way he doesn't figure it out and start naming names. There will be 7 draft picks and 5+ FAs signed right? So thats 12+ jobs that are going to open up at the least? The guys who get replaced aren't going to spread the news that the Bears aren't trying? Plus there will be changes in the coaching staff, maybe not high level assistants, but some position guys will end up being replaced. They are going to talk. Its a nice theory but I don't think it holds water.

The sad thing is that the team didn't have to "try" to be a loser. We were a dead-bang "natural" at being a loser. It's what the Bears do. And they do a damned good job of it too.
