. It's tough to gauge Field's performance when he's running for his life. Put Fields in Green and Gold with clean pockets yesterday and he looks like Love. Instead of dreaming about drafting a quarterback next year put a line together like GB or like the Lions did in front of Goff.
+1 That's my take on it too. It has been years since the Bears put a decent OL in front of one of their QBs. Have they "tried" some years to do better? Yes, I think they have. But trying isn't the same as getting it done.
No question whatsoever the Packers won both LOS and that was the definitive factor. Every freakin time Love needed to convert a 3rd/4th and long, he had time to post on twitter before throwing the ball. If you're gonna play a cover-2 soft zone, you have to pressure the QB or any NFL caliber passer can hit crossers all day long.
And I repeat--the receiving corps Green Bay put out there was garbage by NFL standards. They may be highly athletic guys with lots of down-the-road potential, but there wasn't a single proven, above-average weapon out there. It didn't matter cuz the Bears pass rush was so non-existent (only sack was a coverage sack), that Love looked solid despite missing some easy throws. Rodgers/Adams/etc would have scored 50 easily.
You're correct that Fields had only a fraction of the breathing room Love that Love did. His coaching/playcalling sucked by comparison as well. I'm putting less blame on him accounting for those things. Still, he missed shots at Moore he should have taken. He didn't show the pocket awareness and comfort level you'd like to see for a QB in a "breakout year". Packers safeties were questionable and weren't challenged at all. It was definitely a step backward from "breakout status".
The Bears OL hardly played as a unit in preseason. There were a bunch of soft tissue strains and pulls plus Nate Davis pulling some personal shit. As a consequence the top-5 barely practiced together and it showed. It makes me sick knowing Orlando Brown was available and ended up signing for under $20m/yr. Poles made no play for him.
How different would this OL look right now with Brown and Wright at OT and signing/drafting a better C instead of Nate Davis at G?
Yeah, I bet if you could crawl inside Ryan Poles' head right now, he is wishing he had done THAT instead.
1. I keep hearing that but don't buy it. I think Love is better than Rodgers was last year and I think he'll have a better year than Rodgers will this year. 2. Probably why they didn't want to put Fields out there in the PS. 3. Are you sure about that? There's always conversations and negotiations we don't hear about.
You are right we never know for sure what happens behind the scenes but at the time several reputable Bears beat reporters tweeted out that they were "Not interested" in Brown, despite having plenty of cap space to work with. Bears brass later seemed to validate that by citing "poor scheme fit" as the excuse.
A 27 yo, healthy All-Pro LT hits the open market, the Haley's Comet of NFL rarities, and our GM sat on his hands with dollars to burn.
That's gonna be really hard to defend if Braxton Jones keeps playing like ass.

Two things can be true: Fields played poorly and the coaching/gameplan was terrible.
One game in a long season but....it was the same as last year with no improvement, not even small steps. That makes it a schematic and coaching problem above all else.
Screens work when they are used in conjunction with downfield passing. The throw back screen to Jones work because Love was throwing the ball down the field. So when he roll out it felt to the def like they were setting up a deep shot. DL gave chase and LBs flowed to Love's side of the field. Stop, plant, throw back and TD. But the DEF had to react that way because of how GB was running their OFF.
Now the Bears: DL stop their rush and closed on the screens from behind because...there was no downfield passing. When they felt the OL block and float out, because there had been soooooo many screen passes it was easy to recover quickly. They didn't have to fear Fields setting and tossing downfield. Because he wasn't going to. Screen passes work when the DEF is reacting to something else. Screen passes don't work when the DEF doesn't have to react to anything other than screen passes. NFL defenders can defend WR screens when they know its the staple of the OFF. Look at the Mooney/Claypool disaster we saw. At the snap Mooney steps back and the Claypool does even pretend to run a route. He just stands up. GB now knows its a screen and the defender was on Claypool before Fields even throws the ball. Again, by throwing sooooo many screens they gave away the plan. Its really game planning 101.
Fields echoed what he heard when they installed the game plan when he said something like "We had numbers on the outside we just didn't block. Those were chuck plays we left on the field." Yes but NO! Because there was no down the field component to the OFF GB LBS/S/CBs could prioritize where their attention went.
I honestly think Getsy saw the two screens for TDs in the PS as proof his concepts worked.

It was a total "fail" on so many levels. And while yes, it was only one game, it is alarming that NOTHING really looked good and EVERYTHING, pretty much, looked flawed or downright bad. Pretty much anyway. I don't know how you fix this team now that the season has started.
I said before the game that I did expect some rough play and bad plays. But I also thought there would be some "good" mixed in there with the bad. But this was an "all systems failure" - coaching, players, play calling, effort (the lackadaisical effort made me sick to watch) - it was stunning to watch what the Bears brought to this opening game of the season.
I posted this in the Brad Biggs' thread but I'll toss it in here too. On top of everything else (a lot of failure) how do you win in the NFCN with the 4th best QB? Jordan Love totally outplayed Justin Fields. How sobering is THAT to think about?

Poles handed a late round 2nd year player the starting job of the most important position on the O, next to the QB, LT. And he looked like shit yesterday.
That is pure f'n hubris on full display. All the HITS, all the everyone has to compete, expect his draft picks that is. Never a reason to go into a season w/a 2nd year ? at LT and a rookie RT.
Worse they had questions at C, and apparently their primary backup plan for RG if Jenkins got hurt was their starting C. What an absolute terrible thought process the entire OL was this year.

Meet the OC for the Bears.
Reading this makes me wonder if Fields is a fit for the Shanahan offense
Not for a lack of trying double dipped into def multiple times early in both drafts and both fas day 1 was def focused
As ptisme already pointed out in the chat, the Packers have a habit of drafting defensive players w/ their first and second round picks. The difference is GB seems to have a much better scouting department than us.
“Other” for all of the above. So disappointed in this team. BUT, I have to believe this will light a fire and wake them up. If I don’t believe that I’m not going to be able to tune in next week. 🤦♂️
I agree, this loss has got to wake them up. Not to mention that Tampa is not gonna be an easy game, either. Baker Mayfield is trying to salvage his career and is going to be extremely motivated. If our defense keeps playing like that, it could be another blowout loss I'm afraid.
