Bottom of the WR room, Practice squad, and both injured. Not surprising to me. They were on season ending IR. Why is this surprising? Sadly its what happens to fringe roster players in the NFL.
They must trust Scott and the new guy for the return game. That's all Pettis was ok for
The new guy (Trent Taylor) has been in the league for 5 years. The first three as a 49er and the last two as a Bengal. Over his career, he has had 188 touches/possessions/whatever (87 pass receptions, 89 punt returns, 8 KO returns and 4 rushes. He has had 4 fumbles (I can't seem to find a specific muffed kick stat, please post one if you have access) with 2 lost. All of these were on punt returns. That is a lot better than what I have seen from the Bears over the last few years.
He is also an acceptable emergency slot receiver. He has 87 receptions for 834 yds (9.6 yds per reception), 3 TDs and 46 first downs. A decent possession type slot guy. I think Poles did a good job getting him of the waiver wire.

They should cut V. Jones. Don’t need him. Add more depth to the line. I’m betting we aren’t done with the injuries.

And we’ve tended to have a bunch of them who we put in as starters…

And often we make these guys out to be players we are surprised get cut or don't play.
VJones is going to get more snaps than we think he should because he still has potential with the ball in his hands (he is however running out of time). Pettis even without an injury to me is just a guy, I'd rather play Jones or Scott. Ford has 63 total receptions and didn't play a snap in the NFL last season. Neither one of these guys makes me question why they were released even without injuries.
Lets say the Bears dress 6 WRs on Sunday. These would be my picks.
Moore Mooney Claypool Scott Jones (KR) Taylor (PR)
ESB? He's Josh Bellamy 2.0 People want him on the roster because of a skill other than playing WR (which involves...catching the football?). Which is actually his job! What we hear is "ESB is the best blocking WR on the team." You know who used to be the best blocking WR on the team? WIMS!! Last we saw of him he was dropping TD passes or getting expelled from games. You know what my enduring memory of ESB is? Fourth down, less than 2 minutes left, game within reach and he's running past the first down marker wide open crossing in front of Fields. Fields hits him in the hands...and he dropped the ball. Its not him blocking on a running play.
