So Bears should have every starter except Jenkins (Flus said Brisker is on track to play) available. Packers have significant injuries at WR and its unlikely any of those 3 will be 100%, assuming they even play.
Doesn't take a genius to know that La Fleur is gonna rely heavily on Jones and Dillon and their OL in the running game. If you contain that reasonably well, it's improbable that Jordan Love and a beat-up unproven WR group are gonna beat you.
This game (and our season) will come down to the linemen - both DL and OL. We will find out just how good or bad they are in this game.
1. Big test on defense will be for the DL. Can they handle the Green Bay run game? Or not? The rest of the defense can get it done if the DL can get it done.
2. Big test on offense will be the OL. Can they get our run game going with solid run-blocking. Or not? Can they give Fields time to run the offense? Or not. The rest of the offense can get it done if the OL can get it done.

Lorin Cox says same thing. Bears are stronger in the so-called “skill” positions than in the trenches. I worry about the entire DL and the middle of the OL.

No matter the number of changes over the years, the game is still won and lost in the trenches.

+1 With Jenkins out and Whitehair back to guard with Patrick at center, our run blocking is probably not going to be as good. On top of that Nate Davis (I guess he really DOES exist) will be at RG after missing summer camp and almost all of the preseason. And on top of that we have a greener than a gourd rookie starting his very 1st NFL game - ever - at RT. There is not enough Kool Aid for me to feel comfy with that in the Green Bay Packers opener.
I hope it all works out okay. But I would be shocked if the OL is clicking and getting it done in this first game. It could be a Chinese fire drill to watch. If it is a total fail at pass protection too - well, it's gonna be a butt ugly day for the offense. Fields will be roadkill and the ball will be turned over early and often... I picture him getting hurried and throwing picks.
I hope I am wrong. But if the OL is bad, well, the game is bad.

That reminds me of another conventional wisdom— you start building your trenches first and work out from there.

My gut feeling is that the DL could be "okay" in this game. Not great but better than last year. I expect them to be a bit better pressuring the QB and a lot better stopping the run. I'll take that. The offense is going to have to score decent amount of points though. I hope that your prediction of 27ppg comes true because I think that is what it's going to take to have a chance at a win here.
