I previously said, for example, that I have no problem with Fields calling audibles when the defense is stacked against the run. I will say again that I am only talking about Fields calling plays in the huddle in normal game situations.
I think that's what they're saying here. He isn't replacing Getsy but just being trusted enough to adjust Getsy's offense real-time to exploit what the defense is doing. If your QB isn't sharp enough or trusted enough to do that then he's a bust. Some OC's are control freaks though and Getsy isn't one. Sounds like Fields is extremely smart and Getsy wants him to read the D's and go with his instincts.
I know I might be wrong, but as someone not being sold on Getsy...
... I'm not sure if I trust Fields to do this yet.

Bears have no time left for growing pains
It's going to be VERY interesting to watch the offense this year to see if the scheme itself is good or not. Last night I watched this film breakdown by JT O'Sullivan and it concerned me about the Getsy offense itself. JT is pretty objective in his analysis of Justin Fields - and overall he is very positive about his potential as a good all-around QB. But this particular analysis is not a good one of the offense or Fields. He cautions that it's just a tiny sample size of an insignificant preseason game. But all the same it was not a good outing.

I don't think we saw enough of Fields and the first string in PS to make any sort of valid judgement on what we will see. I am not trying to agree/disagree with anyone on this, just that we will really see what Getsy has in mind and how well Fields has developed over the next 3 or 4 games.

+1 And in fairness, that is what JT was cautioning there in his film breakdown. He is a big Justin Fields believer. But JT also is brutally honest when he breaks down QB play - and that brief outing by Fields was not good. And he REALLY did not like the Getsy scheme/plays there at all. He repeatedly pointed out the craziness of some of those plays (not Fields but the scheme itself failing Fields). Something for sure was not clicking there. Small (downright tiny) sample size, but it was a bit of a train wreck outing for the #1's. Not something to over-react to. But all the same it was not a good look for Fields and Getsy.
I did start a thread on that film study video asking people there what they make of this. I'm curious what everyone is thinking as we head into the Green Bay opener.

According to the time-line most of us have accepted, Fields has this year to prove himself worthy as QB1 or else Poles drafts a QB in 2024. Calling audibles is part of his test.

I'm with David on this one. Its year 3 and the training wheels need to come off. That includes Fields having more authority to change plays as needed.
It's sink or swim and I WANT TO KNOW THIS YEAR what the answer is going to be.
yeah... Fields has to prove he can be QB1, but in the end I don't really trust Getsy offense.
+1 I just don't believe this franchise understands HOW to support and develop a quarterback. It's like asking circus monkeys to build a spaceship... the monkeys simply are not capable of doing that... and the monkeys at Halas Hall are in the same category. They have had 3 years to fix the OL and get a competent OC in place for Justin Fields. It has been a total fail.

When your C's are Mustipher and Patrick... for years, u know McCircus Monkeys are out to kill JF. Maybe they have a fat insurance on him, and with their cornfield buying masterpiece, they are desperate
