This is a good article worth reading. Getsy is letting Fields call his own plays now. Not all of them. But there is a trust level now that has the OC letting Fields run the offense. It is Getsy's offense, scheme and plays, but Fields gets to run the show much more than he has been allowed in the past. I like that. I like that a lot. This season will be quite a long journey. I don't expect things to run smoothly these first games of the season. But by mid-season i do expect to be watching a very good (much improved) offense on game days. But it will be a work in progress this season. All I hope to see is that the offense continues to improve over the course of the season. Just get better each week.

But what I'm thinking is that Getsy is now in year-2 with Fields in this scheme now, and he is doing his best to let Fields do what he is most comfortable doing (within the scheme/playbook of course). It is so different than the Nagy way of forcing things... the square peg in the round hole thing. This season is perfect for letting Fields do this. The team is not ready for a deep playoff run. It is a .500 win season at best. Let Fields get comfortable doing the passing he feels most comfortable with - and gain confidence (no QB is worth anything if he doesn't have confidence). My gut feeling is that the offense - and Fields - will be a lot better this 2nd year in the Getsy scheme (better players and familiarity). It should set up the offense for building on that in 2024 - with an infusion of more talent and the 3rd season in this scheme.

I 100% expect the offense to look pretty rough in the beginning games this year. But I also expect to see improvement - real, and significant improvement over the course of the 17 game season. I don't think any of us expected 2023 to be some magical big year for the Bears... pretty much everyone has predicted a 7 to 9 win season. I'm okay with that.

That is VERY different than allowing Fields to call plays in the huddle. That is an improvement only if Fields is a better play caller than Getsy.

It could also upset the chemistry between Fields and his receivers. Their livelihoods depends on getting “targets.” This puts Fields into the middle of that potential friction. So long as Getsy called the play, Fields is innocent.

If this is true, and Fields has a significantly greater understanding of Getsy's offense, we should se a significant leap in the efficiency of Fields as a passer. And I would advise to visiting the Chicago Tribune article that is Lambert's base for his posting (link). There is a lot more in Dan Wiederer's article than what Lambert posts. It sounds like Getsy and Fields are really working well together. I understand that we nneed to see it work out in our favor in a real game. But it looks like Getsy will start our a series with a play call and then the next several plays will be up to Fields. I really found a quot form Wiederer extremely interesting. It is about Fields' flexibility in the 2 minute drill.

Question: You’ve come a long way in your relationship with (offensive coordinator) Luke Getsy, and he’s talked a lot about how much more advanced the conversations can be now because of your understanding of the offense. What have you come to appreciate in Year 2 about the way you guys can collaborate on where you want this to go and how to put it together?

Answer: It’s just me understanding the offense more and him giving me the reins. I think Mooney said something the other day about me being able to control our two-minute drills in practice. Luke will just have that be on me. So he’ll just call the first play and then we’re on the ball and he’ll just leave it up to me on what plays I want to call.

Then even before a drive, like in the last game, he was just asking me what pass plays I like. Boom, what I want to run. I told him ‘This play. This play. This play.’ And he ran all of them. So it’s just that trust between us. The biggest thing is just that trust between each other and him knowing I’m going to take care of the ball, make a good decision and not hurt the team.

I definitely have a better understanding of the offense. That just allows us to have those new conversations and more in-depth conversations.

Fields is a smart guy. You would expect him to have a much better feel for the offense in year-2. You would also expect Getsy to ask him what plays he likes/doesn’t like and to factor those preferences into the play calling. I have no problem with Fields calling plays on the field inside 2 minutes with the clock running down. Most veteran QBs do that, too.

I distinguish all that from the idea of Fields calling very many plays in the huddle in normal game situations. My comments only apply to that scenario. Those calls should be primarily in Getsy’s hands. That’s an important thing he’s getting paid for. The coaches on the sidelines and upstairs in the booth see things that Fields cannot see.

Actually, I had real issues with the way that Flus/Getsy were handling Fields in the beginning of last season.

I hope that Fields earns (or has earned) the respect of the coaching staff this season and can audible away from the called play if he sees a defensive set that will blow up what was called and reliably shifts to an alternate that has a greater chance of success.

IMO this is the biggest jump that Fields can show us at the beginning of this season. If we see that from the word go next Sunday, it will be all good from there.

I think that's what they're saying here. He isn't replacing Getsy but just being trusted enough to adjust Getsy's offense real-time to exploit what the defense is doing. If your QB isn't sharp enough or trusted enough to do that then he's a bust. Some OC's are control freaks though and Getsy isn't one. Sounds like Fields is extremely smart and Getsy wants him to read the D's and go with his instincts.

If calling audibles is all we’re talking about, that is what an OC should expect from a capable QB.
