Yes, I know it's "just preseason" but I'm left feeling a little disappointed at this point.
You know how the enemy offenses looked their first drives vs the Bears the last 2 games? I would have liked to see the Bears 1st-team offense look like that too. You know what I mean by watching it -- smooth, precise, seamless, and professional. Running 10 plays with 8 of them being successful plays that culminate in a TD.
Why does the Bears offense so seldom look like that? What does it so often look jankety and out-of-whack and like a old car belching black smoke at the side of the road?
I'm good with our running game. Not worried about the RB room at all. We have good talent and depth there.
Not concerned at all with the DJ Moore trade. He's a legit stud who's even better that I realized and is gonna be good for us. Trouble is, the Bears offense, passing offense anyway, has been 90% DJ Moore catching an off-target pass from Fields and taking it for 40+ yards of YAC.
TBH, no one else on the 1st team offense has been all that impressive.
Claypool has been on a milk carton since PS began. Mooney, Kmet, and Tonyan have shown nothing.
The OL should be a strength and much improved but I'm afraid it isn't happening....yet anyway. It's a little disappointing considering the amount of investment made there. We signed a G who apparently has attitude issues and has barely practiced in months (not a joke there), we moved Whitehair from G to C and then back to G again right before the season starts, Tevin Jenkins and Lucas Patrick are apparently incapable of staying healthy, and only 1 guy on the "starting 5" has shown any continuity or durability thus far. [Kramer got hurt today too.]
Pretty hard for the OL to "gel" when you can't get more than 2-3 "starters" on the field together for any extended period of time. It's really frustrating that the Bears can't seem to assemble a reliable, quality OL no matter how much money or draft picks they throw at the problem.
And then there's JF1. It sure would be nice to see him throw the ball like Josh Allen did. It sure would be nice to have seen him hit those back shoulder throws today. He didn't. The passes simply weren't very accurate.
I'm not panicking by any means but Fields needs to look better than that in the RS. The time for excuses is rapidly drawing to a close. In just two weeks, it's put-up-or-shut-up time.
Are we gonna see a competent NFL passing offense or not?

We are not, like I said before Mooney was an overrated player who was the best of shit players we had. Having someone of DJ Moore skill set shows that we really don't have much of an offense. I expect a ton of Fields running and DJ making plays while we say goodbye to Claypool and Mooney this offseason coming up.

I agree with your entire post. But this part jumped out at me in particular.
The OL unit has new pieces and some very young tackles too. If ever there was a summercamp/preseason where the Bears OL needed the same 5 starters to be working and grinding together, all camp/preseason long, it was THIS year. Instead it was a crap shoot each day as to who was working together as the #1s.
That's a big problem.
I get it that injuries (and other stuff) happens... but it is a killer when it happens to a new group trying to establish something TOGETHER for the first time. A more veteran group (by vets I mean guys who have experience working together at these 5 positions - and know each other well) can overcome a changing lineup better. But for us, it just took the OL out at the knees. The more jumpled the lineup became the more the unit deteriorated. It really WAS herky-jerky. And that translated to the offense itself.
If the OL is misfiring then the offense is screwed until the unit is executing well as a unit. I think that's going to take some time now that the camp/preseason period never really happened for this group (being together as 5 starters). Expect the beginning of this season to be herky-jerky as you pointed out. I don't know how they can fix this thing without 5 guys getting experience together... really we've only had 1 guy of the 5 in there grinding each day of camp/preseason - Brax.
The D line has it's own tale of woe, but it hasn't looked good either. Soft. Way too soft.
Yeah, it is pretty deflating to be going up against Green Bay like this. I expect an ugly game and a loss. I don't know how it can be otherwise with the lines (both of them) not where they need to be.

After digesting this entire summer camp and preseason, I think your point is well taken as far as DJ Moore being the lone ranger this year. He seems to be "it" and the others haven't shown much. If they have, well, I have not seen it this preseason. Teams can shut down (speaking relatively here) DJ, or at least manage to minimize his threat - if the Bears can't get others producing. Bears really need for Claypool and Mooney to be threats too this year. And maybe they will. The injuries to the OL has reduced what looked pretty promising early in camp, to now being a hit-and-miss unit. Only 1 guy, Brax, has been healthy and playing his position. 4 of the 5 OL positions have been cobbled together guys on the fly.
We need to get everyone healthy at WR and OL and maybe we'll see something good happen this season. I don't think the team will look good at all against Green Bay. Just some herky-jerky stuff on offense. Too many 3-and-outs. Fields and DJ will make some plays and we'll see some highlight reel stuff scattered in there. But that didn't do much for our season last year. It won't this year either. Both DL and OL have to be better than what I am seeing right now.

I hate to say it but I'm afraid you might be right and I wouldn't have said that 2 weeks ago.
Again, not out on a ledge here yet, but I'd be kicking some serious ass over the next 2 weeks if I'm Flus. And I'd be really taking a hard look at my training staff and practice regimen cuz its freaking ridiculous the Bears can't keep more than 20% of its OL on the field at any one time.
Can we just sign Dalton Risner please and cut Lucas Patrick? He and Jenkins are simply medically unreliable (at least Tevin is good when he can play, Patrick isn't).
Can we pick a damn starting center and stick with it?
Can the 1st team passing offense look a little more well-oiled?
Am I really asking that much?
Really really don't want to crap the bed yet again on Packers week. And it feels like the offense is not where I hoped it would be to "be ready".

+1 And again. I understand injuries are gonna happen, but it's especially hurting the Bears due to the unit having 4 of the 5 guys playing this year at new positions - and one guy is a rookie with all the learning curve stuff that he will have to overcome. Injuries in this situation are especially challenging when the guys can't even work together as a unit. It wouldn't hurt quite as bad if it was a bunch of guys who had time together in previous seasons.
Jenkins injury was a killer in particular. The move of Whitehair to cover for Jenkins hurt us. I was really liking Whitehair at C and with Brax/Jenkins on that left side. That looks so good. I was excited about our season. I don't know what is going on with the Nate Davis guy at RG, but that guy not showing up this year really hurt too. Bears invested some serious money in that guy. They NEEDED him showing up this summer camp and preseason. And the rookie, Wright, needed to be working along side that veteran getting ready for this first season. The whole think just pisses me off to be honest. What looked so promising a month ago, kind of went down the crapper as the summer progressed. We don't even look good running the ball right now - as far as the run blocking goes.
