Interesting. I see very little fields hype that is positive. I see loads of hot-takes about Fields not being able to play QB. maybe I need better sources.....

Hurts is basically just a one-year wonder at this point. The other two seasons were pretty average. Not as overrated as Cousins and Jackson, but still...
This season is really about what we have in Fields. If he takes significant steps forward, we can draft next year edge, olineā¦.if not we have to draft his replacement.

Would be really nice not to have to draft a QB next year, and inject other key positions with some potential elite talent to help Fields even more. Winning games will be important for the team psyche, but QB1 HAS to take that step forward first and foremost.
This means either Kramer or Patrick (neither of whom have been healthy in literally 12 months) are goners. This is Leatherwood's replacement who can play C or G unlike AL.

I was looking over his career blocking grades, season by season, along with the grading of his 109 snaps last year. He is not much as an OL. Marginal backup at best. He graded out in the 50's for both run and pass blocking (overall grade of 51.8 for the 2022 season). If our depth OL can't perform better than this guy then we have total crap on our roster depth chart. JMO.
Poles better spend some serious draft resources on legit talent next season. How on earth can we NOT have better talent than this guy on our roster right now?

Couple things, JABF:
A) Anyone expecting to get an OL who is more than "marginal" or "depth" right now is kidding themselves. You know that. That's all you're gonna get at this late stage.
B) Poles has invested a ton in the OL, including a 1st rounder, multiple late rounders, and two FA signings that were both expected to start (Patrick & Davis). He has NOT "neglected" the position at all.
C) The situation we are in right now is almost entirely on the interior and it's not due to lack of investment. Patrick and Kramer have both been injured literally 12 months straight. Then Whitehair hurt his hand (amazing how many Bears OLs have hand injuries, isn't it?). Tevin Jenkins has missed 2 of 3 opening days and has been hurt now in all three of his NFL seasons (I doubt he gets a 2nd contract because he can't be counted on). And to top it off, Nate Davis sounds like some sort of diva content to sit on his ass now that he has been paid.
If I were Poles/Flus, I'd be taking a really hard look at my OL coach and training staff and ask some tough questions. I know injuries happen and maybe this is all just "bad luck" but yeash it's ridiculous how many games and practices have been missed by these guys.
Somebody needs a major KICK IN THE ASS. This ain't right. Nate Davis definitely needs one too.
I doubt they will but I'd cut Patrick today -- I'm sick of him being useless. I'd draft Jenkins replacement next year as I don't think he will be here past 2024. Put Whitehair back at C and leave him there and start Carter at LG until Tevin comes back and, if he can't stay healthy rest of the season, I'd trade him next spring for whatever you can get.
Hopefully we have our OTs set but the guys they have at G/C simply aren't getting the job done.

Lots of teams across the league are struggling to find OL and DL, its not just the Bears. We know the Bears problems intimately because we follow them. We also tend to believe that every team as multiple depth players capable of being starters, and that isn't true at all either. Most teams don't have backup OL who could start on other teams, most NFL teams simply have....backups. This isn't an Alabama v Navy situation where Alabama can keep sending out NFL prospects at RG. Let's view the problem with the proper lens.
NONE OF THIS IS TO SAY I'M HAPPY WITH THE STATE OF THE OL/DL RIGHT NOW. I'M NOT. I'm not one to talk about having perspective because I usually dont' have any, but in this case we need some.

I agree with you. I didn't expect the Bears to get a great offensive lineman at this point. I thought that maybe they would get a decent "project" guy.... maybe a a high ceiling young guy off these waiver wire cuts. My only disappointment is that I really believed we had IOL backups better than this guy. It was a bit of a stunner to me that they would trade for him. Sobering. And I don't question Poles' pursuit of OL upgrades. He has definitely tried to do that. The injuries are just plain bad luck. Jenkins is a stud if he can play. The problem is he is injured a lot. The other various injuries have been bad luck and nothing more. I don't know what the story is with Nate Davis... maybe there is a good explanation for him not practicing or playing. But I am not disagreeing with you on any of that.
