The new guy (Lewis #52) made a nice play like Mack coming behind QB to hit arm and cause fumble. What do you think of him?
He played 38 snaps and had 2 sacks and a hurry. That strip-sack turnover was a very nice play for sure. Sounds like he's having a great camp too.
LINK "Terrell Lewis has been a standout player during training camp, and after Saturday’s preseason win, it feels like he has a legitimate shot to make the roster. Lewis generated consistent pressure off the edge, leading the way with 2.0 sacks against the Titans. He added two tackles, one QB hit and a forced fumble. If Lewis continues his strong play, there’s no reason he won’t make the roster."
Yes, on that play, he made me think of that other #52! I recall he’s also gotten to Fields in training camp.
I wasn’t impressed by any of these guys except Gipson. Meanwhile, Jalen Carter looked great in his very first preseason play— quick penetration and dropped the QB. Warren Sap 2.0 to my eyes.
Please tell me we aren't gonna start this up again.
Poles was never gonna draft Carter and with good reason
Oh...he's gonna start it up again! And just wait till JSN does something of note one time.
He was awful at T and my understanding was that he had a lot of penalties with the Raiders when they tried him at G.
If that's cleaned up and he looked solid as you said, that's a major score. IDK what the heck is going on with Nate Davis but he and Patrick have been hurt a lot and Jenkins hasn't exactly been durable his first 2 years either. We need Borom, Carter, and Leatherwood to be at least serviceable as backups.
+1 That's the bottom line with me too. Of course we want great starters on the OL. But competent backups are very important also. Leatherwood was a bust as a Raiders' 1st round draft pick. No question of that. But he wasn't OUR first round pick. If he is just a solid backup, then I'm fine with that. He is making $1.9-mil this season. By comparison, Carter and Borom are getting $900,000 or right around that, this season. The new guy, Logan Stenberg is getting around $1-mil. So, Leatherwood is probably being overpaid for a backup guard. But to cut him this year would incur a $4.5-mil dead cap. So, if he can perform as a solid LG (good enough to truly pass-protect Fields if Jenkins goes down with his annual IR gig) then it's worth paying him this year.
Haven't seen much about Borom but Leatherwood & Carter definitely got some accolades which is encouraging. I care more about OL than DL this season, given the need to evaluate Fields, and that's why I don't give a darn about Jalen Carter. Darnell Wright is way more important to the "success" of this season than a DT would be. Wright and Brax looked good as well which was good to see.

Actually, I was starting to get over it until Eagles training camp reports started coming in. There were reasons, but I still predict they were not good. All the issues were transitory.

IMO Lewis and Gipson have all but made the team. If they keep 4 DEs, Dom Rob may be headed to the PS. I don't expect miracles but a decent pass rush looks realistic this year and your buddy, Goff, has a rep for turinng to poo when he doesn't have a clean pocket.

Here's some REALLY good news. Larry Borom played 41 solid snaps... almost all of them at LT in that game. Last night I rewatched that game for the 3rd time focusing on the OL play. Borom looked solid at LT in that game. At least to the eye test. But he also graded out very high by PFF (I know, not always the best source, to say the least). He graded out 83.5 for pass protection and only allowed 1 hurry. No sacks. No hits. His run blocking grade was even more impressive at 94.9. He looks like a good combo of power and athleticism at LT. As backups, Borom and Leatherwood look solid to me if the starters, Brax & Jenkins go down to injury. We obviously need to see more than just 1 preseason game before we anoint those two as good backups. But it is an encouraging start. I think this OL coach is a keeper. The overall blocking in that game was superb. Yes, some breakdowns and rough plays... but overall, for a first preseason game I was so impressed. Those dudes got out fast to the second level over and over again. Good speed and athleticism for OL... at least I though it was impressive to watch how they got it done. LOL I'm looking forward to that second preseason game now, bigtime :-)

This team is set up to excel in the screen game. We have guys who can take it to the house as we have seen and we have really good blocking OTs, TEs, and WRs. I wanna see Fields get better with his ball placement on those short sideline throws. He wasn't good at it last year and the throw to Moore wasn't good either.
Those passes should be right on the money 95% of the time.

I agree. It's funny. I have often noted over the years that QBs who are good with accuracy, can misfire with those short passes. You'd think it would be so easy that anyone could throw those well. It must be some kind of mechanics issue that makes short passes more difficult than they look to be. But yeah, Fields needs to get that fixed.

Faking and timing are also critical in screen game.
Just remember that preseason pff grades are mostly against rookies and other backup players. So I would mostly take it to mean that our backups are better than theirs.

I agree it's backups. But you can't imagine how concerned I have been over our depth going into this season. I was so impressed with our depth on the OL that was showcased in this game. But I was relieved to see the backups perform as well as they did. The execution was really solid. In other words, we seem to have guys who can perform as well as you could expect backups to perform if they are needed to replace a starter. Some of them have starting experience too. I credit the Bears OL coach for developing these young guys well. And this is year-2 in this zone blocking scheme... so hopefully they are settling into running these blocking schemes better execution-wise. Also, they blocked well as a unit adjusting to D pressure and blocking responsibilities. That's something that really sucked last year and D guys were getting untouched at times - with confusion as to OL adjustments to pick up these guys. So much improvement.

He does. I recall a ton of misfires on easy screens and short outs last season. He did it camp again on a slant (DJ Moore couldn't bail him out in that one like he did in the recent game). Remember Trubisky constantly throwing uncatchable balls (usually in the dirt) to the flat?
Everyone focuses on the highlight reel throws but a big part of being a franchise QB is hitting those easier throws with darn near 100% accurate ball placement. Most passes aren't for 20+ air yards, most are short. No excuses this year for Fields--love the guy but yeash you gotta hit the guy in the hands on those.
