Thanks mpbears68 for posting this news in the TC and Twitter threads. It's important enough to have its own thread here so we can discuss it, so I hope its okay that I moved your post to its own thread here. I loved this quote about Ngakoue in the Chicago Tribune this evening:
LINK "The Bears can use Ngakoue as a designated pass rusher, meaning he would play mostly in sub packages. That could result in him getting 70% of the defensive snaps or more. He joins a team that has DeMarcus Walker, Trevis Gipson, Dominique Robinson and Rasheem Green, among others, at defensive end.
Ngakoue is only the fifth player in league history to record eight or more sacks in each of his first seven seasons. The other four are Reggie White, Derrick Thomas, DeMarcus Ware and current Los Angeles Ram Aaron Donald."
He's an awful run defender (the reason he was still on the market) so expect him to be mainly a 3rd down pass rush specialist.
Look at him as a bridge DE/Edge until we can draft/sign a more permanent fix next offseason.
I think the defense as a whole should now be able to be roughly league-average instead of bottom of the barrel like last year, so once again looking to the O to take a major step forward as well.
I can quibble with a few minor things but Poles has done all he reasonably could to get this team turned around and pointing in the right direction. Fields has to step up now.
One-year, $10.5 million that includes $10 million in guaranteed money
I hope Poles is playing contract chess here and he's 5 moves ahead, otherwise I'm not quite getting this deal.
Player fits, young, etc. But one year... we'll see.
This is exactly the kind of deal I hoped for but never thought Yannick would sign.
They need a pass rush now, but could draft one or even two in 2024 with high round picks. I think Ngakoue's agent was holding out for a multi-year deal, but nothing materialized so he took the highest one year deal out there.
I hope he is awesome, and then gets a big contract from another team, netting the Bears a comp pick.

YN just learned a hard lesson. If he was even just a decent run defender, he would have gotten a much more lucrative multi-year deal and much sooner.
He might want to work on his game there. The knock on him is that he doesn't even try to stop the run so can't play on anything but obvious passing downs/distances.

I have wondered why we haven’t tried Sewell or Sanborn as DE. I think having both on the field is a plus. Both are exceptional tacklers and Sewell at 253# has the size.

Both Sewell and Sanborn are only 6'2''...so they don't really have the length you'd want from a DE. That being said, Sewell has shown an ability to rush the passer, so I was wondering if they'd use him in a stand up role to do that within the defense.

Helps them reach the spending floor they need to reach, solves a need for this season while Dom Rob hopefully develops more, could net a comp pick if he does well and signs a good deal elsewhere, his $10 mill comes off the books for next year, etc.
