Interesting point. A lot of fans have written him off already. But he was just brought in here in November and we really don't definitively know what he brings to the table in this Getsy/Fields offense yet. Obviously, he has to showcase he belongs here before you extend him. But he could still showcase a season that ends up with him getting extended. He is just 24 years old too.
Would any of you be surprised if the Bears did extend him, if he has a good season?
LINK Sounds Like Bears May Already Have Plans To Extend Chase Claypool
ON PAPER, THE BEARS HAVE A STRONG RECEIVING CORPS, AND IF THEY COME THROUGH, WIDE RECEIVER WILL NOT BE A PRIORITY POSITION IN THE NEXT DRAFT.
GRANTED, CLAYPOOL AND DARNELL MOONEY ARE COMING OUT OF CONTRACT AFTER THIS SEASON, AND MANY FANS BELIEVE THEY WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO RE-SIGN ONE. FIRST, I DON’T BELIEVE THAT TO BE THE CASE, AND SECOND, RYAN POLES DIDN’T TRADE FOR CHASE CLAYPOOL AND GIVE UP A SECOND-ROUND PICK TO GET HIM AND THEN HAVE HIM ONLY BE AN 18-MONTH RENTAL. TRUST ME, THAT TRADE WAS MADE FOR THE LONG TERM. IN THIS OFFENSE, THEY WANT A BIG, FAST AND PHYSICAL X WIDE RECEIVER WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT CLAYPOOL IS.”
LINK The Claypool news, though, was a bit of a surprise after the 25-year-old receiver was spotted training with quarterback Justin Fields and other teammates in Florida earlier this month. Bears coaches had also stressed in June that Claypool was expected to be fully healthy for the start of camp. Now, on the eve of training camp, Claypool’s status for the preseason is up in the air.

Eh...doesn't mean too much. Vets haven't even reported yet...right?

It's not something to over-react to. But it is unfortunate that he is still not healthy.
I was reading Lester Witfong over at WCG (link). Here's his take:
With NFL training camps opening later this week, several teams are doing this with players, and many of those are just precautionary.
There could be a real issue there. But, at this point, I think it is more likely a way to jump on the hype on Claypool from a couple of weeks ago and get a lot of clicks/page views.
either that or he got a paper cut opening the mail and it's not related to the previous injury. IF it is the previous injury not healed or aggravated, then it's worry time. But we won't know that for a while.

I think its more procedural than anything else. He left OTA's with an injury, so they're probably just putting him on there until he passes his physical, which he'll take when vets report tomorrow. I'm not certain, but I'm wondering if all teams must report these things by a certain date, and the Bears had to because other teams have already started practicing.
nothing better than multiplying a mistake w/another one. Classic GM move, I cannot admit my mistake, so I'll extend to prove it was a good move and hope it buys me a few years and everyone will forget the first mistake.

Don't extend him yet. Give him one more year to prove he's not a bust. Now that the OL has been upgraded and the fact that most DBs will be busy trying to defend Moore, Claypool's numbers should be much better this year.
