Andy Herman is doing a review of the three other NFCN teams. He has the Packers at about the same record as last year. Following is a preview of the Bears. I’d like to hear ur thoughts on the points he makes on where the Bears sit in 2023. I personally love hearing what people who are fans of opposing teams think because they can be more objective but often less knowledgeable:

Here are my reactions to that video:
1. He clearly didn't grasp that last year was a soft-tank season by design. Yes, of course, the Bears were the worst team in the NFL. That's the whole point of tanking for the incredible harvest of talent in 2023 and 2024. Twenty draft picks, multiple 1st round guys spanning two seasons (D.J. Moore is our other 1st rounder for this season, along with the best offensive lineman in the 2023 draft, Wright... and two 1st round picks in 2024). The soft-tank was executed to perfection. This roster for 2023 is MUCH improved as a direct result of that.
2. I do agree with him in that "What failure looks like in the eyes of the beholder" can vary from person to person. It's so subjective. If we have a non-playoff season this year, that doesn't equate to a failed season. Not this season. Because the roster was totally nuked and is being rebuilt. Last year was the teardown and tank year. This is year-1 of the actual rebuild. I expect the Bears to be somewhere around .500 this year. I agree with him that 2024 is the playoff year. But that isn't a failure... not at all.
3. He mentioned the DL not being able to stop the run. I don't see that happening in 2023. I have no clue about the edge rushers for this year - and yes, that is a problem. But I have zero worries about the 2023 DL stopping the run.
4. On offense I think we will be better than what he projected. Our run game should be lethal. I see that as top-3 in the NFL this year. The passing game WILL be better for all the reasons mentioned (much better OL, better skill players, better RB room - even the TE unit should be better). Will that keep defensive coordinators awake at night before they play us? I don't know... but the offense in '23 is going to be much improved.
With all of that, I do expect a 7 to 9 win season this year. Not a year to expect great things but a year where the Bears will be FAR from the worst team in the NFL. I think that if any of the NFCN teams expect the Bears to be a pushover this year, well, they'll get handed their asses on game day. Bears will be a legit opponent and not a tanking team this year. This year they have a much better roster AND ALSO will be in the 2nd season in these schemes.

Well to start...the NFC North is pretty wide open...so every team is technically a contender right now. Minny is probably the front runner, but they're no lock with the talent they've lost. Detroit has to prove last year wasn't a fluke and they can take the next step. Packers don't have Rodgers and the Bears added A LOT of talent.
Like JABF mentioned...last year the team took any sort of talent not named Fields and got rid of it, to go with injuries to Mooney, etc.
2. As for his "last 6 games" comment. Yes, we didn't score a lot of points...but for 2 of those games(Jets and Minny) we had our 2nd and 3rd string QB's play. Let me see any team in the NFL put up a lot of points with their 2nd and 3rd string QB's playing.
Further, not all the games were "blow outs". We were BEATING the packers 19-10 going into the 4th quarter and they didn't take the lead until there was 4:49 left in the game, going up 1 after a FG. Scoring a TD and 2pt conversion with 1 minute left doesn't make it a blow out. The game against the Eagles was a 1 score game, 20-25...thats a blow out?! The Jets game, with our 3rd QB was a blow out, the Buffalo game was a blow out, and the Minny game with our 2nd QB was a blow out, and the Detroit game that Fields was awful in was a blow out. 2 of them, one of which went to the Super Bowl, were close games and had we had any semblance of a defense, we probably win.
3. DJ Moore is a "nice" receiver? LMAO!!!! "A couple off ball linebackers"...like they weren't the two BEST linebackers available and two of the best in the league last year. "Missing on McGlinchley"...did we really miss? We should have overpaid for an OK right tackle?
4. "The trade was good". No...the trade was GREAT. Is the pass rush an issue? Yes. Do we know what Dexter and Pickens will give in that area? Nope. They could be great, plus Walker adds to the pass rush ability from inside and outside.
5. "Theres a lot of DJ Moores at wide receiver in this league"...LMAO...tell me you haven't watched DJ Moore without saying "I haven't watched DJ Moore." Moore has played 2 games against the Pack and he's lit them up for 15 catches and 251 yards. Lots of those guys around the league though...LMAO!!!!!
6. We added one of the best interior run stoppers in the game in Billings and drafted two very good DT's. Plus Edwards and Edmonds...we'll be better against the run.
7. I don't think we'll be in the playoffs, but they'll be MUCH better barring any injuries than they were in 22. This guy acts like no talent was added whatsoever. He also says to "stay patient", but then crushes the Bears for not blowing their $100 million dollar cap space on free agents and not using some of the draft capital they worked to attain to trade up from 9 for an edge rusher with some serious injury concerns. Make it make sense!!

And the fans of opposing teams can be the other way too - less objective but more knowledgeable when it comes to their own team. Often these fans can be overly critical of their own team. The blogger seemed like a really good guy trying to best to give his take on the Bears for the upcoming season. But I was thinking to myself that his comments were probably as accurate as mine would be, if I tried to do a podcast on the Packers team for 2023. If I did that it wouldn't be very accurate regarding some stuff. LOL, and maybe I would whiff on all of it.
Regarding the NFCN this upcoming season, I think it's kind of up in the air as far as how good or bad they will be. Any of the four teams could surprise us. And the wildcard in all of this is the injury level to these teams. That's a real game changer. It could (could, not saying it will) kill any of these teams' season. I think we all just need to let the season unfold and watch what happens. Rodgers would tell us R.E.L.A.X.

+1
We've added a ton of new people over the last two drafts. And the last 9 or 10 months have seen an incredible amount of change. So, there is no way to apply any sort of metrics or other analytical tool that can use any sort of past performance to help predict the future.
I think one of the things that confounds most if not all the talking heads is the NFCN will likely end up as a four-team bunch as far as W-L records go and there could be as little as 2 or 3 wins separating the top from the bottom of the division.
As optimistic as I am, I understand that we won't know what we have until halfway through the upcoming season.

You are right. It is all just speculation until we get into the regular season. But here goes…
I agree with Herman that the worst part of the Bears 2023 roster will be the defensive line. I am not worried at all about the offense, and agree with JABF and butkus that he is is underestimating the Bears running game as well as the passing game with the additions there plus Fields development. I am confident that the Bears running game will be at or near the top in the NFL.
I think the NFCN will be between the Bears and Lions, and give the edge to the Lions. I agree with you that it will not be by a wide margin. If our defensive line is better than expected, it is even possible we can beat the Lions. But that is a big IF!

+1 The running game is going to open up the passing game for us. With better skill players around Fields, plus the fact this will be the 2nd season for Fields in this offense, and also a better offensive line - we should see a far better passing game this year. If opposing defenses don't sell out to stop the run, then this offense will run on them all day long. I don't expect gaudy pass yardage numbers, but I do expect to see a team that will gut a defense with some really nice passing plays.
We have a lot of young/new players on this team, so I don't expect everything to run smooth at the beginning of the season. I do expect to see the team improve from game to game all season long as the players get game reps together in the schemes.

I was just listening to Dave Wannstedt. He is 100% on the Lions bandwagon.
Bears may need one more year to get the defensive line fixed before we can beat them. Then Super Bowl ready by 2025.
As a general rule I don't read fans of one team giving opinions about another team, especially division rivals. My opinion of the Vikings, Packers and Lions is extremely colored by my Bear-shaded sunglasses.
You never know as much about your division rivals as you think you do. He could be right, most likely he's wrong.

I continue to see this roster as you do, David, in that 2024 is needed to get the talent where it ultimately needs to be. Obviously, no team goes from "last in the NFL talent" to being Super Bowl ready - overnight. The DLine should be better against the run this year. Edge rusher upgrades will come in '24, along with other upgrades to the talent.
We had 10 drafted in '22, 11 more in '22 - and 10 more coming in '24. That's 31 players in 36 months. Then we have other significant upgrades outside of the draft (some of which have been huge, like the D.J. Moore acquisition).
