Orlando Brown Jr signed with the Bengals. Now I'm convinced our RT is in this draft and not FA.
Really thought we'd grab more bodies for the OL. I love building through the draft but we had league leading dollars to spend and even if a player is eventually a top player at his position it's hard to count on that starting his rookie year. Really want Fields to have a monster OL sooner than later.

Paris Johnson Jr. reunites with Fields?
I'm with ya on that. But maybe there is still a FA OT they have their eye on that I've missed. But it looks like slim pickings to me right now. I like the G they signed. It will be fascinating to see what the Bears do now with the rest of the OL.
I expected OB to ask for a get much more $$$ so I have to wonder what KC offered him to stay. The fact that they paid $20 AAV for Jawaan Taylor whose supposedly not as good must mean something. Maybe OB isn't quite as good as some believe he is.
An AAV of only $16 mil alone shouldn't have pushed Poles away so there must have been something else. My guess is that OB would only sign where he was assured of playing LT and I don't believe Poles would assure him of that. So OB signs with Cincy where he can play LT.
I've felt all along that Poles would more than likely be drafting OTs and that OB was never as high on his list ass McGlinchey and McGary. I believe he did pursue McGlinchey but we lost out to Denver who back loaded the hell out of his deal just as they did with Ben Powers. Essentially both have three year deals that become far less affordable by even year three. McGlinchey's deal has an AAV of $17.5 mil.
Pick #9 has a 4 year deal valued at $23.5 mil/$14.2 SB. AAV of just under $6 mil. I can't see where we'd be any worse off with Johnson or Broderick Jones or even Skoronski than those vets and we save a ton of money too boot. The DL needs more help but there are still a few 1 tech/NT types Poles can sign and the draft has both DE and DT prospects who can be had on day two/three.
So we'll see how it shakes out over the next month but as it stands right now it does look like Poles will do what he can to finish off his OL this year in order to give Fields his best shot at elevating his play with better protection. Poles stair stepping approach seems to be based on completing his moves for one unit before working on another and to me the signs point toward getting his OL squared up first. There are also three day two OC prospects he may also go for.

That is 100% accurate, in fact he said himself he was only interested in sure LT spot, so we were never really in it I guess
When u look at our OL situation ATM, we have 11 guys under contract for 2023 + draft pick(s). Thats not a small number.
Whitehair G/C, could be cut, but most probably not before June 1st Patrick G/C, could be cut although injuries killed him last year, cut would provide us with 4m cap extra Jenkins best OL when healthy - 2y contract Leatherwood - 2y contract, basically non-cuttable this season cos of dead Borom - 2y contract Jones - starting LT, 3y contract Carter - 3y contract, have a feeling this kid could be a starter this season Eiselen - 1y contract + ERFA Kramer - possible reserve at C, 3y contract Diesch - 2y contract + new sign Davis, starter at G, 3y contract
When u observe at all of these young guns, there is a lot of potential here, will it come to fruition, remains to see.
I think they're going to give Patrick the opportunity to actually play the position he was signed to play...center. I also think Poles went into free agency with a price in mind knowing he'd be perfectly fine taking his choice of right tackle in a draft pretty deep at the position.
So the assumption is that Poles didn't make an offer because he only signed for $14m AAV? We assme that Poles didn't even call? We don't consider that Poles offered RT and Brown said no? We don't consider that the shorter road to the SB runs through Cinny? We don't consider that Brown didn't want to come to Chicago? It must be Poles right?
I love how as a collective we have gone from "Bears have the highest cap money but shouldn't over spend it" to "Poles should have outbid for every FA I wanted! He MUST explain himself to me. I can't believe he ruined the season."

lot of beat guys don't think he offered anything b/c the bears need a more athletic OT then what Brown is. If he's not a scheme fit it makes no sense to even call.

I agree, but the thought around here is that "No, that can't be right, Poles must have f-ed this up because he didn't out bid for Brown. He has the cap space just throw more money at him!! More money!!! More money!!"
I believe there are two explanations that are better:
Browns's own words: “I’m super thankful for the opportunity to carry on my father’s legacy and be a left tackle,” Brown told Mike Garafolo of NFL Media. It was important to be able to play that position and play for a winning team and a winning quarterback. Who Dey!”
What Ric said: Bears determined he doesn't fit their scheme and they like Braxton Jones.
Both make more sense than throwing a hissy fit and demanding that Poles must have messed up because all it takes is money!
