Given the front line OT talent available in this draft to have guaranteed McGlinchey anywhere near what Denver did would have IMHO been the complete reverse of what Poles has stated he will do. Edmunds was actually guaranteed less and should have a much bigger impact overall than McGlinchey. There are no Tremaine Edmunds in this draft. There are Mike McGlinchey's.
I can understand what you posted about the cap costs and values, etc.
But I disagree that Edmunds is gonna have that much impact. We now have an excellent ILB group--that's great. Except for the fact that the position isn't that valuable as Poles himself said when he traded Roquan. He actually mocked his predecessor over drafting him top-10.
And our DL (as currently constituted) completely blows. Which means Edmunds and co are gonna be frequently dealing with OLs blocking them on the 2nd level. Without a much better DL in front of them, I wouldn't expect much from our ILBs.

However we did pay Edmunds less than what Roquan got. And I'd imagine Poles understands the state of the defensive line and plans to address it. Besides that, Edmunds will offer more in the pass coverage area than Roquan could have. Different types of players.

One of those to FA LB's is going to play LB and get to rush the QB. Probably not Edmunds, but it could be they switch them around also. No reason to be paying ground breaking RT contract money, not when you can get a rookie.

Ya' kinda said it for me so all I can do is embellish it.
Edmunds can be this defenses Brian Urlacher. Consider the challenge QBs have when trying to thrown into coverage and over a 6'5" MLB with a 34"-35" arm length. I'm thinking it's that and his sideline to sideline range Flus likes. He's former LB himself and I believe he believes he can make Edmunds even better as a Bears LB. Imagine Edmunds incentive to become yet another Bears HOF LB.
The DL is still a work in progress but I feel it will be much better in September than it looks now. Worst case scenario is Poles adds yet another run stuffing DT to pair with Billings on early downs to protect the LBs. We need to give all of this time to play itself out. But in my mind Edmunds and Edwards are a major upgrade from Smith and Morrow in several ways. JMHO of course.

Yeah, if you remember before we had the ideal 3 tech in Tommie Harris we had Ted Washington and Keith Traylor. Two big bodied DT's to keep the lineman off Urlacher. Granted that wasn't Lovies defense, but it was a 4-3 nonetheless.

I do recall, yes. But that defense took off under Lovie using much smaller DT. Tommie Harris played at 290lbs. Henry Melton another good 3 tech we developed also played around 290lbs. We can draft one and develop him.
So when people say that so and so is only 280-290lbs that's not too small for a penetrating type 3 tech DT. Justin Jones is actually much heavier than that. Shame about Tommie Harris' injuries keeping him from being an all time great DT.

Interesting bit of trivia. When the Broncos drafted Traylor he was a 6'3" 250 lb MLB who could run a 4.57 40. He bounced around for 5 years never sticking anywhere then returned to Denver as a bulked up DT. He also had a 62 yard interception return for a TD while playing in Denver. For a big guy he was actually fairly athletic and fast. He just couldn't keep it up at 340lbs.

Yeah, the ideal 3 tech that Lovie and Flus want is not that big...they have to be quick and explosive off the ball so that they can penetrate and disrupt the blocking in that manner.
