I read that Monty wants $12M. How would you feel about going with Herbert plus a rookie? I want Barkley or Jacobs, but if Monty tries to play hardball with Poles, I can see Poles going to the draft for the other RB.
I'll start with the fact that I love Monty. He's a good locker room guy, good receiver, good blitz blocker, and moves the pile in short yardage.
But he isn't worth $12m and he isn't gonna get that in the FA market. If that's his "red line", then bye-bye and good luck. I would want Poles to draft another RB in rounds 3-5 then.
I have zero interest in Jacobs and not much more in Barkley to be honest.
I read that Poles MUST spend over $150M in 2023 to end up above the 89% level for the 4 years ending 2024. I want to buy Pro Bowl WR and RB for about $30M total or less. He can do that and STILL have more cap space than nearly every team in the league.

How the hell can Poles spend $150m if he has only $100m in cap space?

It would not even be a record The Jags spent $173M on 7 free agents last year. Not all guaranteed money counts against the cap for this year, but you would need a capologist to explain the details. My point is that Poles has to spend the money, because he spent ridiculously little last season with all his cuts, rookies, and lost dogs. So now that he’s going to be spending tons of money, he can easily afford the plan I recommend: DHop + Barkley/Jacobs + 3 FA linemen. That’s a perfect pre-draft setup.,.

The top 51 contracts (IIRC) count against the cap. The bottom few are always nothing more than cheap deals for fringe roster players. So the vast majority of a teams player expenses count against the cap.
I'm gonna call BS on that $150m figure until someone explains it to me.

It is not BS. You can look up Jags spending 2022 and see it was $173M. You have to spend at least 89% of the cap over a 4-yr. Period. He underspent last year so must overspend this year to get above 89%. The cap limit does not apply to all contractual liabilities. I don’t understand all the accounting nuances, but I guarantee you the Jags spent the $173M in guaranteed money, but it is spread out over the years of the contracts. It did not all hit against their $56M salary cap for 2022.

I understand there's a minimum spending requirement though I read it's 90% over 3 years. Maybe someone could clarify?
But there's no way the Jags spent $173m just on free agents last year. That just can't be right. The entire cap is what...about $220m per team?
And it's not possible for Poles to spend $150m when he has only $100m is space. That would put the Bears over the cap limit for 2023.

Something doesn't add up here.
I edited my last note. Some of the 150 applies to the 2023 cap and some to future years. The 4 years are 2021 through 2024. He needs to make up at least $150M level to get above the floor. At least that’s what I read somewhere. The Jags committed to $229M spending on day-1 of free agency last year, and $175M guaranteed. Their salary cap was $56M. I believe these numbers are verifiable facts.

No on the $12m. Sign Barkley if Monty isn’t willing to be more realistic and then draft a RB in the middle rounds.
I found this and posted in further back in the thread:

For each of the following multi-League-Year periods 2021–2023 (three League Years), 2024–2026 (three League Years), and 2027–2030 (four League Years), there shall be a guaranteed Minimum Team Cash Spending of 90% of the Salary Caps for such periods.

This is compared to what the team spent during those 3 years. Can't find anything about dead cap space. So I assume that has to be included. if that is true, then:
$615mil: total cap from 2021-2023 (with 2023 being a projection)
$522mil: Bears spending from 2021-2023 (2023 only includes players currently on the roster)
615-522 = ~$86mil to hit the floor. This is the minimum Poles/Bears can spend this off season.
____________
I ended up with Poles needing to spend 86mil at minimum, but Leming/PPF says $150. It has to do with cash outlays next season not total contract value. Regardless of the number, Poles needs to spend a lot of money to hit the floor. He can front load contracts if he wants, or do shorter contract with higher values (which I approve of as few FAs are worth their paid value a few years in.)
