I guess it is a good problem to have when coordinators are so good they get head coach jobs. I wonder. Is there anyone on the O coaching staff who could step up for 2023 as OC?
LINK Why Line Could Form for Luke Getsy Where the uptick for Bears offense could inevitably lead for their coordinator.
When you look at 14 teams in the NFL with three wins or less, and a possibility that 10 of those could wind up with head coaches being fired unless something improves, the openings could be there to make candidates with far worse credentials than Getsy's into a head coach.
There does seem to be a lot of talk about Getsy getting an HC gig. He interviewed for HC last year for the Denver job. Brad Biggs thinks Andrew Janoko could be a candidate to be our OC next year if Getsy is a HC somewhere.
"If Getsy were to leave, I imagine quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko, who also has done nice work with Fields this season, would be a strong candidate to be promoted to coordinator. I can’t imagine Janocko would want to change a lot. What the Bears have done really well is try to play to the strengths of the roster, and that’s as important as the scheme. We’ll see what shakes out, but there’s no question Getsy has a bright future."
Janoko would probably be the next in line. If our OC gets an HC job it means the offense is playing well...it also means the QB is playing well. I think if Fields is the dude we'll never have a shortage of offensive coaches that want to work with him.
another very good reason to never higher a Def HC. this is going to set back Fields again w/another new system/oc.
I would not hire a new guy who plans to take Fields back to square 1 with a whole new system. He needs to build on what Getsy started, not tear it.
That's why I'll bet they will go with home-grown talent like Janoko. Don't fix what isn't broken. Keep the schemes, terminology and people in place and build on that foundation. Don't force the players into a new scheme if the scheme is putting 30+ points a game on the scoreboard. You sit the new OC down and tell him if he tries to get cute and pound square pegs into round holes - he's on the first flight outta here at O'Hare.

Right. And the offense can only get better from here with upgrades to the OL and WR positions. Honestly, at this point, I don’t think it will make a huge difference one way or the other whether Getsy stays or goes. The show will go on so long as the new guy stays the course. It will be Eberflus job to make sure that happens.

What is most important now, is to acquire the right player talent. I love watching JT O'Sullivan break down video in "The QB School" he does each week. It sounds like there really isn't anything new in any of these team's schemes. The terminology is different between teams, and the individual plays called in a game are different. But teams pretty much build a playbook from plays that have been around forever. John Madden talked about this almost 40 years ago while covering the '85 Bears. He said it isn't the scheme that makes the team so good - it is the player talent executing the scheme. It's all about the player talent. You either have it, or you don't. Coaching matters, but coaches can't overcome a lack of raw talent (and the player football IQ necessary to develop that talent).
It's on Poles now to supply that talent.
2023 is a big test to see if Poles has the gears to get this team where it needs to be talent-wise. These stone-hand WRs and OL getting bull rushed like rag dolls - that's not gonna get it done here. Fields can only do so much if the surrounding talent isn't great. Great. Not mediocre guys we "hope" will develop someday. We need legit top-tier talent. I am so tired of watching the Bears slop together a roster on offense with mediocre talent (and worse). I'm so hoping Poles is better than the failed GMs here of the past.

Poles has no excuse for 2023. He has a full plate of draft picks and nearly double the cap space of any other team.
