And yet we still hear about, and talk about, him being overpaid and needing to be replaced.
I don't pretend to understand these contracts - so I'm probably wrong about this. But looking at his contract it appears to me that the Bears restructured it to move the big money coming due to these later years of his contract. Here's the LINK. His cap hit for this year is, $12,300,000. And next year it's $14,100,000. Next year's dead cap hit is $8,306,000. He was a Pro Bowl center before being moved to LG. He seems roughly comparable to Lucas Patrick to me. Patrick's full 1-year deal pays him $5,382,500 (including signing bonus and workout bonus).
Now, if you want dirt cheap OL, get guys like Sam Mustipher. Sam makes less than $1mil/year (total pay this year is $895,000). That is less than Braxton Jones makes ($989,888 this year). Teven Jenkins total payout is $1.9m this year, $2.2m next year and then $2.6 in 2024.
Larry Borom makes roughly $1mil/year (slightly less this season and then a bit more each year through 2024). Riley Reiff will make $3mil this year to ride the pine.
I’m not looking for a cheap oline as the game is won and lost upfront. Did we sign some lower costs FA’s? Yep, and we get guys like Mustipher too, as we had no choice due to the disaster of Nagy and Pace. So far, Whitehair is all we have as proven talent that’s playing. Others either are injured or unable to beat out rookies.
