We are in the 2nd season of the rebuilding effort. This morning it occurred to me that there is a wide range of opinions regarding the Bears fans on the state-of-the-team right now. Granted there are a lot of unknown factors that need to be solved. And how they solve those factors will determine the outcome. Could be good. Could be bad.
But in general, how far off do you see the Bears from being a playoff team?
As always it depends on which postion we draft and if the players we draft are good. With good drafting like REALLY good I can see us in 2018 perhaps 2017 if we dont get that many injuries and we have Alshon back + White playing great. But we would need to get a stud DE that can start, along with a starting SS/FS + CB. (Rookie of the Year good kind of players) Then we could have a chance because on paper we got a lot of good football players, but injuries have forced rookies and development player into starting. If we get all our players back healthy for the majority of the season along with new rookie stars we could reach it in 2017 but I think it's most likely that with good drafting we make it in 2018.
Getting a QB like Derek Carr would also improve the chances a lot over starting Cutler imo
If they hit on a QB and get DE/CB/S/RT squared away they could compete next year, but realistically 2018.
Btw, saw this on another site.
That amazing OL for Dallas(that they've had for 2 years now) 3-1 w/Romo last year 1-11 w/out him. 2010 Colts OL only gave up 16 sacks that year, 2011 no Manning 1-15.
OL's do not make good/great QB play. They enhance them. You cannot take a bad/QB put it behind a great OL and all of a sudden have a great QB. That's not how it works, that's not how any of it works. I'd also point out that great QB's make average OL's look better then they are b/c of their pocket awareness and ability to get rid of the ball quickly/on time.

I agree with that. I would only add that a weak link in the talent-chain can limit the ceiling for an offense. Certainly a great QB can do more than a bad QB with limited surrounding resources. But there is a limit to what a QB can overcome. A 2nd tier OL may be enough for a great QB to work with. And a great OL won't make a bad QB good. It might help a bit, but that is it.
We don't have to have a Dallas-level OL, although that would be a dream come true for me :-)
But we do need to upgrade our tackle situation, and our depth at tackle for next year. If we wanted to really go "all in" on the OL, I would replace both starting tackles and move Leno to be a swing tackle. I would have the interior linemen battle it out and the top-3 start, with the next guy (probably Grasu) as a high-quality backup who could play center or guard. If you utilized free agency wisely, along with the draft, I think you could pull this off.
I'd like to see a OT drafted in in the first 3 rounds, and another brought in in FA. The interior is nice and hopefully Grassu can either be the future OG/OC primary backup.
The OL isn't that far off, it's not going to be mistaken for Dallas mind you, but few will; and if the Bears ever get their depth issue and QB issue taken care of, it could eventually be. Dallas had it's TE, WR, QB and RB all set, so only the OL needed worked on on O. Their D had some pieces in place, but had some needs that will be addressed in the future now that the O is set.
Who knows. As mentioned, turn arounds can be swift or stationary. I think this could be a playoff team next year- doesn't mean it will be. We could also soak in the pool of suck for years. We'll see.
The way the 2016 season is turning out...the Bears will have another "soft schedule".
(Not that it meant anything this season)
We play the AFC North and the NFC South which feature a lot of teams currently hovering at or below .500. The NFC North is not looking much stronger.
The Bears have to sort out their QB situation before it is really fair to make predictions, but playoffs in 2017 is certainly attainable.
Good points Jamais but an additional factor is that even a top 3 QB will not normally be ready to manage the O until after 2-3 years of tutelage in a good system.

There have been a number of QB's who have done a decent job their rookie year. In 2012 alone there were 3 playoff teams with rookies. Also, a quck Google search named Ryan, Flacco, Marino, Everett, Big Ben, Kosar, Elway, Sanchez and others as rookie playoff QBs. Russell Wilson not only took his team to the playoffs, but also to win the Conference Championship - and the next year the Super Bowl.
That doesn't mean we will get a guy like that. But many rookie QB's have performed a decent job their first year as starters. Some have even made the Pro Bowl.
It used to be that rookie QB's carried the clipboard for a vet that first year. But it's not unusual for a rookie to start now. Before anyone jumps on me here, I'm not saying we will get a guy who does this. But Dak isn't the first rookie to excel in his first season.
