I thought I would make this its own thread. Here are 2 charts that have the draft history of the past 20 NFL drafts at quarterback. The first chart includes all draft rounds. The second chart shows rounds 1-4 only.

I highlighted the Bears drafted QB's in bold red. It is interesting to look over 20 years this way. We often discuss the Bears woes in drafting a solid QB. But honestly, we don't draft anyone very often... not serious attempts in the top 4 rounds. Anyway, I thought I'd post these here in case anyone else is interested.
I think some of the other posters have a good point, in that if we have solid coaching, OL and player talent, then it is not some impossible task to get a good QB in the draft.
On the other hand, if you have problems in those 3 areas, then I don't think it matters who you draft. That young QB will fail here.
I think the coaching will change for next year for the better (both OC and HC).
Our OL has some nice pieces already. We are not that far off having an OL that is plenty good enough to support a young QB. We have a decent RB in Jordan Howard. No, he isn't Elliot. But he's no slouch either. A lot of teams would love to have Howard. We are blessed to have him. We also have better receivers than in many past years (like when Hester was our #1).
It remains to be seen what the Bears do next year. But really, if they upgrade the coaching, and a few key players (and between FA and the draft that is very doable) then we could be on the upswing next year. I am certainly hopeful.
One last thought. We should have a top-3 pick in the draft. That isn't just in the first round. Having that high pick in the first 4 rounds is huge.
I think I might have missed a team, but there is how it breaks down, serious means they drafted in the first 2 rounds. 3rd and 4th are normally taken as projects/potential backups not future starters, even if that's how it turned out.
Just for a point of reference Some of those that didn't really bother makes sense.
GB traded for Farve then drafted rodgers Pitt had Big Ben and Stewart(wasn't good but they gave him all the shots to be) NE had Bledsoe(who was about average to pretty good and Brady) Cowboys, like NE lucked into Romo late, but before only tried to draft Carter after Troy then went FA/FA NO's seems to rely on FA rather then draft them high Falcs went Vick, dud, Ryan Colts somehow lucked into Manning/Luck, before manning they had harbaugh who they got from the Bears Chiefs also tended to go FA over draft
I think scouting is better than it was , and we have a much better chance of building a great team if we have a great QB . So , it's time to quit being pusswads and at least TRY , by having the cojones to draft one HIGH . The o-line just needs a little more tweaking ( and if they're smart they'll keep working on it ) , but we could make a big positive jump next year with a high round QB . That's what I'd do .
Here are some things that stands out in the draft history:
1. Some years are just bad years to draft a QB. 2. It is amazing to see that often, the QB's drafted first are NOT the best QB's of that draft year. 3. Consequently, it is just as amazing to see how many QB's were passed over with top picks, yet ended up being solid QB's.
And how much does it matter WHERE the young rookies go? I think it matters to some extent. Even the most talented kid,if he goes to a team that doesn't have a clue, has a tough road ahead of him. Poor coaches. Poor skill position talent. Crap offensive line. A significant part of being a solid QB is confidence. I wonder if some of those QB's would have had better careers if they had landed on teams with better coaching and players around them?
Part of that is who is picking them, and the state of those teams.
Some teams are a disaster, I don't think the Bears are that, the OL is actually, when healthy, really solid. The WR's, if Aj returns and White can be healthy are solid, they could use depth at TE b/c they decided to run w/MR Glass Joe incarnate as their starter, but when healthy's he can at least be a WR. Their RB's are good. It's not like this team is a hot mess and a QB won't make a difference.
The other part is that, especially before the draft went to slotted payscale, that the higher guys had no incentive to really work on their craft from day 1.

That's the bottom-line. While there are exceptions, it is clear that our odds of getting a solid franchise QB are better if we draft in the top rounds.
Maybe these are relevant. Maybe not: Taken from here. Super Bowl winning QBS:

And I thought I was a fb junky .... how do you guys "find" this stuff hahahahahahaha ( but I'm glad you do , cuz it helps clarify things now don't it ? )
