But no one here believes you soul, no one. All most people believe is that Cutler is bad, Hoyer is better (better than Rogers according to some), and any rookie they draft should be able to step right in just like Wilson, or Prescott and rip off 10 wins. After all, if they have an elite DEF it doesn't matter who plays QB. Sometimes I think this fan base deserves to have the team they pine for in their posts.
If you don't try and draft a qb high(first 3 rds) every 4 years or so you are leaving the cupboard bare. The Bears haven't done it since Rex. That's not all on Pace, but he's had 2 drafts to do it, this past one was his best chance and he again ignored it. So yes he left it bare. Fales was never a real option, and any qb disarded by the Browns and Houston weren't either.

This is it, close the thread. Everything we are talking about is simply side details. Despite not wanting Cutler (according to unsupported media reports), the FO/Pace/Fox haven't made a single move to honestly replace him. (Hoyer? Please. He lost his starting job to Manziel. Think about that for a second. And he was quickly dropped by the team he lead to the playoffs. Doesn't that tell you anything?)
Pace dropped the ball on this one, and this team is going to pay the price for that for the next 2-3 seasons. They might (if the DEF turns into a top 5 unit) stumble into the playoffs one of these up coming years, but long term success? No way. Book it.

+1 I think what makes me most angry with the Bears on this QB thing, is that now we are backed into a situation where we pretty much have to draft a QB this coming draft - even if there are no great prospects available. We've heard this mantra for years about "it's not a good year for quarterbacks" yet some excellent QB's have been drafted in the past 5 or 6 drafts. Now, I fear, that this may truly be a bad QB year in the draft - and we end up over-drafting a crappy kid.
People rant about our poor drafting at QB over the past 30 years, but it's really been a self-inflicted wound. Your post, Ric was 100% right on. For years we haven't even seriously tried to bring in a kid through the draft. I'm sorry, the Enderle's, Fales, LeFevour's were late round garbage. That is not seriously looking for talent. That is dumpster-diving.
And if we had seriously drafted kids (like in the top 2 or 3 rounds) and whiffed, we could have gone right back and tried again. Hey. I'd be okay with that. At least you're trying to fix a problem that has killed this franchise for decades. Get in the game and take a swing. Instead it's like we are afraid to even TRY and fix the problem.
I would like to know the last time that the Bears drafted a QB that was good.
Define "good". If by that you mean one who actually won some games for us I'd say Mac around 1982. Jim Harbaugh who was drafted in the 1st round in 1987 played his best football for Indy after he left the Bears. That's about it unless you want to toss in Rex and Orton as being "good" instead of not hopelessly shitty.
We do not do well drafting QBs and it's not just being unlucky. It's partially being unskilled at evaluating them and beyond lousy at developing them. It's been this way for over 50 years so what makes anyone think this will all suddenly change in 2017? That's magical thinking at it's best.
If Pace is dead set on trading Cutler for whatever he can get for him then I would not waste of top pick on a QB. I would wave it in front of Bill Belicheat's nose for Jimmy Garoppolo and another pick or maybe ask him if he'd like Cutler. With Josh McCown as OC Cutler would just love that I'll bet.
But seriously. About the only way the Bears can come up with an NFL ready QB who might prove to be a good or better next year is to trade for Garoppolo. There are no vets on that list who would be better and a high draft pick won't be ready to play any better and entails more risk. Just about any other solution has all the earmarking of another disaster.
I don't know if I want Jimmy G.. He may be good with the Pats but he might be horrible elsewhere. I would say roll the dice. Hopefully the Bears do draft a decent QB.. Not a superstar.. Just a QB that doesn't turn the ball over or have a noodle arm.
I liked Jimmy G, but from what I heard the starting price is 2 1st round draft picks, and that might not get it down, likely need to add multiple picks onto that....and how many QB's have left the NE system and went onto success?
I wouldn't overpay for a qb that hasn't played a full season, not when it means likely giving up a top 5 pick, along w/another 1st rounder and likely multiple mid round picks.

I figure we need to draft our own version of Jimmy G., or Dak, or Wilson, or like any of the other good young QB's drafted over the past 8 or 10 drafts.
When you say leaving the QB cupboard bare it depends what you mean. As for having a young QB on the roster that could in the pipeline then maybe. He did have Connor Shaw, who has potential, but remember Shaw was waived by Cleveland. Anytime a QB is let go by Hue Jackson to me is a red flag because historically Jackson has a good eye for QB talent as well as turning that talent into on field production. As for QB bare for this year then the answer is no, Pace did not leave the QB cupboard bare and actually the Bears seemed to be in better shape than most (and this is coming from someone who has been highly critical of Pace so far). He had his starter (Love him or hate him Cutty was supposed to be the man this year), he had arguably the best backup QB of any NFL team (Hoyer is a backup, not a starter), and although he didn't draft Shaw he had his "young, let's see where this goes" QB on the roster. YSo IMO no one can say he left the QB cupboard bare. If you want to bash him for sticking with Cutty well that's a whole other topic.

LOL That's OK bb I'm used to being wrong all the time. Just ask my ex's.
After looking at that list I can only reiterate that if Bears fans want to see at least some hope of an assured improvement at QB with one who may be more efficient and less prone to turnovers than I would certainly bait my hook and go after Garoppolo. He fits all of the desired criteria; young, mobile, decent arm, played ball college and pro ball in the north, has had good developmental coaching, and some starting experience.
I know at least 80% think I'm crazy but if they don't want to slide even further into the abyss by trading Cutler than IMHO this is the only way to do it that gives me some hope we're being smart. From what I saw out of Shaw in as little time as he played I think it's entirely possible we could end up with two good young QBs with him and Garopplo as our #1 and #2 and Shaw may even be able to give Jimmy a run for his money. The worst case scenario is that we may actually have some valid competition at QB for a change.
