I'm not changing my tune just yet, though I've become for flexible.
What I mean is, if Lazor says he's ready, that's a good sign for Fields being ready - obviously, haha.
Like others have said, the team played a daunted Rams D and the OL didn't look like an overwhelmed unit.
I will note, Dalton was getting the ball out fast. The question remains, will Justin be able to do the same? Or, will his mobility help create a path where he doesn't need to play the short game as much?
If he were a thin runner like Lamar, maybe I'd be more hesitant, but Fields is built.
All said, start Dalton vs the Bengals, but provide him a short leash, the shortest leash possible. If he's playing against the Bengals D like he did the Rams D, pull him at half and let's move on.
Regarding the OL, its hard to say how "good it looked" that game. It was all short passing--Dalton threw only one pass over 10 yards. Plus there's the LT situation now. Borom was DNP today which means no way he's playing week 2; Peters was limited so maybe he can go. I find it hard to rationalize how a QB with Field's size, speed, and mobility would somehow be uniquely vulnerable if the OL was a concern. I think that's just an excuse.
Barring an injury or massive meltdown, I can't see Nagy pulling Dalton mid-game vs his old team. That would be kind of a slap in the face. I think the earliest Fields plays (beyond cameos) would be week 3 and probably not until week 4 which is at home vs the weakest opponent the Bears will face all season.
He's not uniquely vulnerable to injury, you're right. He is a uniquely talented player though, so it's a risk/reward measure. I understand the debate, not everyone holds the same thought process on protecting young talent to the NFL game has the player grows in certain areas.
Would it be a slap in Dalton's face to be sat mid-game against his own team? Absolutely. If he deserves to be sat/if he's not playing well enough to stay on the field, oh well. This is a business, if you fail, your feelings don't matter. He's not the future. Other players won't be sympathetic to him either, they know he has to preform.
My prediction? Dalton will look better against the Bengals compared to what he looked like against the Rams, even if Wilkinson is the starter at LT. This isn't to say Wilkinson is a stud, rather, it's a combination of factors.
• The Bengals D isn't the Rams D - they don't have a player on the DL near Donald's level. They don't have a player at Ramsey's level. (I do respect Jessie Bates tho)
→ Deep shots will now be game planned in. Nagy had the O playing scared vs the Rams, not the case this time around.
→ If the Bengals try to play D like the Rams did, imagine how Montgomery will gash them?
All these play off the fact the Bengals aren't the Rams. This is a match ups league, the Rams are a terrible matchup for the Bears.
