The plane is in the air and it's too late to swap out the engines. I know the Bears have been working out some D guys off the street, but they are on the street for a reason. They are not worth being on an NFL roster. Could be a long season with this defense.
LINK Why aren’t the Bears addressing their secondary more aggressively?
The Bears have less than $3 million in salary-cap space, so at this point to shuttle new guys in and old guys out, they’d be making moves for the sake of making moves. High-caliber cornerbacks and safeties aren’t sitting on the couch at home on Sundays.
The defense got diced up by Matthew Stafford and it was a collective failure. The pass rush, which the Bears have invested so much in, didn’t do its part either. For the defense to work, the pass rush needs to get home, make the quarterback uncomfortable and force the ball to come out early. None of that was happening so stress was put on the back end and the Bears made some critical mistakes.
What can the Bears do? It wouldn’t surprise me if they swap out nickel cornerbacks this week and try Duke Shelley, who was inactive for the opener. Marqui Christian had a tough matchup going against Cooper Kupp, but good offenses are going to challenge the slot cornerback every week. There isn’t any way for the Bears to make wholesale changes in the secondary and making roster moves just to make them isn’t going to lead to progress.
The system is proven to be excellent. The Vic Fangio defense is the model several teams are seeking these days and it’s rock solid with the right personnel. I don’t think we’re looking at a system issue and I know we’re evaluating an incredibly small sample size — one game. The Bears played poorly. So effort isn’t going to grade out real high and obviously the approach wasn’t good.
In terms of the roster, there never is a quick fix once the season begins. What the team starts with is what it’s going to have to play with, and several players are older and with more wear and tear than they had when the unit played at an elite level in 2018. Some players have been underperforming for a while and I don’t know that there is a quick fix for that.

It's possible they may be able to find a nickel corner but even that is a tall order. A boundary corner....forget about it.
The decision to cut Trufant is puzzling, since clearly he wasn't hurt or out of shape (he started for the Saints on Sunday). That would at least have allowed Vildor to cover NB and have 3 somewhat decent corners.
And you need 3. Christian is a practice squad caliber player who should be no more than a backup. What Ryan Pace was thinking here is beyond me.

Questioning the scheme is the ultimate in excuse-making. Here's the real problems.
Mack: Paid All-Pro money but not playing anywhere near that level. Really hasn't been elite in several years. Quinn: Pace's very worst FA signing in 7 years. Guy is on a milk carton, 32 yo, and just cashing a check at this point Trevathan: Another poor contractual decision. Looked old and slow early last year but rallied. Now he's hurt and out. Jackson: Fell off a cliff since 2017-19. Can't/won't tackle and isn't ball-hawking anymore. Goldman: Hasn't played since late 2019 Hicks: Not the same player he was in 2017-19. Hurt last 2 years and now over 30. Fuller, Amos, & Callahan: Gone without adequate replacements. Secondary has gone from elite in 2018 to a dumpster fire in 2021.

Hicks is no problem. Guy is still good when on the field and he loves being a Bear. Eddie Jackson can still make something, but with focus on him being good it's a much harder job for him. Easier to do his game when you have Fuller and Callahan or older Prince as Corners. Mack is doing nothing for years now. I like him, still think he will always be fun to watch. Smith is doing his best, he looks being left alone. Ogletree is no Nick K or younger Trevathan. Neither would be Trevathan now.
I think they need a bit more time as group and cutting Trufant was stupid by Pace.
