This was posted in another thread by riczaj01 but it's kind of buried there and it deserves a sticky for now. This is a man-by-man assessment of every player on our 53 man roster. This isn't by a sports writer but rather a longtime professional scout, Greg Gabriel. If you're worried about this roster talent you gotta hear this. It's really good. An eye opener for me for sure. Here it is:

That was quite an encouraging listen and reflects how I see the roster. I’m a bit more positive than some here. But I do agree with the consensus that at least OL and CB are likely to be huge problems this year.

I do also agree that due to a combination of awful free agent signings in 2020 and heavy investments in certain picks that didn’t provide much value the level of talent is likely to decline before it gets better. I will give Pace some credit for finding value lower in the draft and at times he has done a good job churning the bottom of the roster and has found good players that way. Although he did this a lot more towards the start of his tenure than in recent years.

I felt like I was getting served the Kool-Aid about this offensive line. Given the shaky start, I believe it will be mid-season before we really know what we have here. The one thing he says that I totally agree on is that the cornerback position is going to be the weak link on this team. I still want to pick up another CB from somewhere and just hope it works out -- maybe D.J. Hayden. Cut one of the TEs, we don't need 5 of them.

I agree, David.

Optimism springs eternal around Labor Day every year. There will be some serious reality checks coming by Halloween.

I'm skeptical about Peters holding down LT for an extended period. Heck, I'm skeptical about him making it to Columbus Day at his age. CB is a position group held together by duct tape and silly string. Even if you assume JJ & Vildor will be fine outside (a big assumption), Bears have zilch at Nickel. Of the 6 CBs currently on the roster, Johnson is the only one who would start on other teams.

Prove me wrong, Ryan and Matt--Love to see it! But if Stafford cuts up the Bears secondary like confetti and the O goes 3 & out most of the first half, I am afraid I won't be surprised.

I 100% expect the OL to look rough and maybe flat-bad in this first game. I took Gabriel's input as meaning the OL has some good young players, but they certainly are not going to help us early in this season. Peters is just a guy to hold down that position as a temp worker. He said Peters still has game though. I took it as not Kool-Aid and not sky-is-falling either. Just saying we have some promising players on the OL when you consider those in the pipeline. It's all conjecture and these players could end up disappointing (Jenkins' injury could be worse than we think... who really knows?) but conjecture by a guy like Gabriel carries some weight with me. He is not always going to be right about young players, but he's probably better evaluating talent than most of us fans.

But yeah, this first game could be really really bad for the OL.

I'm not worried about this team because I have no expectations for this season. This season is all about developing Fields. Nothing else matters. Nothing else. OL? Nope. CB room? Nope. Its all about Fields.

I don't care how many games Dalton plays, I don't care how bad the DEF is. I don't care about anything except Fields.

Because of Fields turns out to be the real deal the OL will look better, the DEF will be able to play with a lead and the skill position players will perform better. A great QB raises the game of every player around him.

Am I saying the CB room can't be improved? Nope. Am I saying the OL can't be improved? Nope. Am I saying don't resign Robinson and just roll with the flow at WR? Nope.

I'm saying that from this point on its all about Fields.

I'm not worried at all.

While you're correct that Fields is easily the biggest issue, it would sure be nice if the rest of the roster was also set up for success.

"Expect Bears to add more CBs to roster." No s...T! The article is all about the defensive backs the Bears have cut. I am waiting to see what CB they pick up this week. This is gross mismanagement even to be in this situation.
