Bears have the oldest roster in the NFL. Not a joke, that's a statistical fact.
Ryan Pace, worlds greatest GM
I saw that "oldest roster" comment yesterday. I think we need to take that with a grain of salt. A strong roster is a healthy mix of older vets along with good young people in the pipeline (like Justin Fields and many others we now have). The Bears have been hit hard with the injury bug and had to bring in some older guys (like 39 year old Jason Peters). A number of these older guys are not going to be here for the long haul.
I don't agree with everything Pace has done by any means. In fact I'm pretty critical of many of his moves here. But the "oldest roster" criticism is one to be taken with a grain of salt. There is a LOT of good young talent in the pipeline here. A blind man can see that. But (and here's the rub with me on Pace), we need to see Pace build a team around our new star, Justin Fields, on offense. There is real work to do there. But at least - now - we have someone to build around. Without that franchise QB you have nothing. You're just pissing in the wind year after year. But now? Now there is some good things going on. 2022 and beyond will tell the tale.
My concern is I don’t believe Pace can build a SB quality team. After 7 years, we can’t win the division, can’t beat the hated ones nor are we competitive in the playoffs (we backed in). We got a gift from above with Fields but due to his mismanagement of the cap and cutting players, we now have a crap oline that couldn’t protect Fields if they had too.

Everyone here seems to agree with, or at least understand, the decision to not start Fields right away until we see if the OL will be ok.
Think about that for a minute.
Bears got really lucky that JF fell to them and even after SEVEN YEARS, Ryan Pace still hasn't assembled an OL good enough to trust your phenom mobile rookie QB behind?

What part of "oldEST" is ambiguous? Of course all teams have a mix of young players and vets. Point is, on balance the Bears are older than all of them which means lot of future turnover is coming.
My only point is that you want to take this metric with a grain of salt. We've had years where we were one of the youngest rosters in the NFL - and we sucked. We've had rosters where we were in the middle of the pack age wise - and we sucked. As of yesterday we were the 31st team (second from the oldest in the NFL LINK). The oldest? The Tampa Bay Bucs. Our average age according to that link is 27.0 years of age. The Kansas City Chiefs are 26.1 years of age average. Chiefs and Bucs are screwed this year because they didn't win the age-metric war. Oh, and the "winner" of the young team metric was the Jets at #1, and Lions at #2. Good for them being winners at something.
I do get frustrated by how fans will latch onto 1 metric and panic. The sky isn't falling here. There is more to football than an age statistic. The bears will shed some of these old players soon enough. We will add some good young talent to build around Justin Fields. Of all my frustrations with the team in recent years, age isn't a top worry for me. It will shake out beginning next year.

I get frustrated about it too. But I do believe we've finally got our franchise QB of the future. That is by far the most difficult position to fill, and it is the foundation piece for building an offense around. Now that we have Fields here, I think building an OL and skill players around him will be doable. In the past, with crap quarterbacks, it was difficult for me to even evaluate how good the players were around our QB. There is hope now for something better. If Peters stays healthy I think the OL will be marginally okay. I'll take that for 2021. Then let's see what happens in 2022 and beyond.

Fair enough. I hate to waste a another season and we still end up with the Pace/ Nagy show for the foreseeable future as neither of them has instilled any confidence in me that they can be successful.

Ya but at least Jets fans are lucky. They have a team that loses consistently every season and get high draft picks. One of these years though......... They will get a top 5 pick then go on to win the Super Bowl.

Young and up & coming = GOOD
Old & mediocre = BAD
I really hope "younger" players (Horstead, Mooney, Vildor, Kmet, Johnson, Herbert, Jenkins, Fields) come on strong because "older" players (Graham, Peters, Trevathan, Hicks, Dalton, Foles) aren't going to be here in a year or two.

I agree with you on that. Totally. This present 53 man roster and PS has some exciting young players. Really, the roster has had quite a makeover. I just finished viewing a video posted in another thread by Ric that reviewed our roster man by man, and it pointed out a number of things I had not considered. It was by Greg Gabriel who has been a scout forever. He gave a scouts perspective on each of these guys. It was pretty darned encouraging to watch. Here is it, MP. It's worth watching.
