Everything I am reading points to the fact that Dalton is "all in" on helping Fields successfully transition to the NFL. We fans often forget that these QBs bust all the time and Fields could end up one of the busts.

It happens.

I "get it" that it's cool for Bears fans to crap on Andy Dalton right now. I'm different. I think we are so incredibly blessed to have Andy Dalton helping Fields transition right now. A lot of veteran QBs wouldn't. Andy is basically helping the guy who will take his job. He's a class act for sure.

I would hope Dalton knew that all along. Even if the Bears were able to draft only one the 2nd tier guys (Mond, Trask, etc), he was a bridge QB. Maybe a longer bridge but a bridge none the less.

And I'm not crapping on Dalton here, just being sanguine about who is at this stage of his career. He is probably one of the game's best backups but yeah he's still a backup/spot starter in terms of quality. Nothing wrong with that--heck, Josh McCown and Ryan Fitzpatrick have made many tens of millions of dollars over the years by being a solid backup/mentor type who could maybe win you a couple games as a spot starter if need be. Just like there's a supply/demand imbalance for starters, there's also one for good #2s in the NFL. And Dalton will certainly become a #2 this coming season at some point. It is only a matter of how soon.

Now, if we could only find a way to trade Foles....

I think Dalton did know that all along. At this stage of his career he's as you say, a good #2. And I'm just thankful we have him right now. He's a good vet to have with Fields for this first season. I get the impression he doesn't have the big ego at all and even if Fields were to start in game-1 of the season, Dalton would work hard to support Fields this season. He'd be a great guy to have in that QB room.

Every little thing like this helps. Fields has good coaches helping him this season and a good QB room too. You're right we don't need Foles, but if he does stay on the roster this season, he too seems like the kind of guy who would help Fields too. Foles seems like a really good guy to me who would put his ego aside and legitimately try to help Fields. Just like Dalton. So many QBs wouldn't go beyond lip-service as far as giving legit help to a kid like this.

I so badly want Fields to be the guy who breaks the decades of failure here at QB. Every little bit helps I think. Even having two vets in that QB room like Dalton and Foles. Fields is going to be in a QB room with two guys who total almost 20 years of NFL QB experience, 4 Pro Bowls & a Super Bowl MVP between the two of them. Fields (I like to believe) has the physical talent and the mental gears to be great... these two vets can help fill in a lot of the things he doesn't know - and needs to know. Maybe shorten that learning curve too. I'd sure rather have those two guys rather than say Trubisky or Jay Cutler. Nothing against either, but I don't know they'd be ideal in this situation.

I agree with you.

Certain practicalities come into play though. Neither Dalton nor Foles is practice squad eligible so you'd have to keep all 3 on the 53-man roster (most teams keep 2) so that bumps someone else off--a reserve OL, a 6th WR, a 4th TE, etc, etc. They both would count against the cap since both would easily be within the top-51 salaries that count.

Bottom line is, Bears really need to unload one of them (most likely Foles for sure). No team intentionally carries 1 1st round rookie plus TWO vet backups. The NYJ are the obvious target as they have a rookie in Wilson and no vet backup/mentor. They truly do need "a vet #2". Need to work out a deal to get Foles' salary off the cap and his roster spot open for someone else. I don't expect to get much for him--maybe a 6th--but it has to happen.
