Fields is likely way further along than Mahomes was at this point in 2017, based on their respective experience and competition in college (as well as "big games"). JF has PM beat hands down.
That doesn't mean he will ultimately be as successful or even that he will be "ready" by September necessarily. But plenty of QBs--good ones--started right out of the gate (Luck, Wilson, many others). Nagy wants to lower expectation for Fields of course and I understand why. Still, I'll be very very surprised if he isn't the starter by Halloween at the latest and it wouldn't shock me one bit if he clearly wins the job in camp either.
