As the article says, the preseason has meaning this year. It's gonna be mighty interesting to watch how this all plays out at LT & RT. I'm surprised they let Leno go this year instead of next. They are waking the tightrope without a net.
LINK Preseason Once More Has Meaning for Bears Matt Nagy has never put much faith in preseason games but this year he really needs to see those meaningless battles because of the left tackle position.
Of all the risks taken by Bears general manager Ryan Pace with the roster he has compiled for 2021, the biggest has to be at tackle.
The possibility exists they could start two rookies, although Germain Ifedi looks like the more obvious choice at right tackle. At best, the Bears will be protecting Andy Dalton's blind side with a rookie left tackle who didn't play the position regularly in college, although he was prepared to be there.
They're also leaving the blind side of their franchise savior quarterback, Justin Fields, in these same hands.
I've been one of those who have been critical of Leno's play. But as a number of you have pointed out, he wasn't a bad LT by any means. He was serviceable and he carved out a good Bears career here for a 7th round draft pick guy. A likeable guy too. But I thought they'd keep him one more season. I'll be honest. This move worries me.

I hope they know what they are doing cuz I would have liked to keep him one more season too. Yeah, I get the cap constraints but turning over both OT starters in one offseason is risky which is why you don't see teams do it very often (KC had to this year because of injuries).
You cannot accept average at LT, throw this kid in and see what he can do. All accounts are they wanted him at LT, and up until their RT got her he was going to play at LT. He got bad advice sitting out this year b/c it would have likely shown that he could play LT, or couldn't but if the college coaches believed in him I'm not going to doubt them as they were the only ones that saw it. It worked out for the Bears though, he dropped to the 2nd round b/c of it; all the scouting reports I read said OT or OG, not left or right, and most of the guys had that designation in some way; so scouting groups didn't believe he was only a RT, that's 2 points in his favor imo
Pace is dammed if he does and damned if he doesn't.
Seasons end: Got to replace Leno and Maddie Massive not resigned. Ifedi ( whom I was told represented the investment of a first round pick in the OL) re-signs to play RT. Response: fàns rejoice
FA: Pace signs a vet OL (Wilkerson) who has experience as a starter. Response: Good job creating depth
Pre-Draft: Bears are too old, [insert number here]st team in the =league. Got to get younger across the board. Pace needs to find multiple starters.
Draft: Pace drafts two OT, including one with a first round grade. Also, new QB (way to bury the led there brasil...) Response: Amazing!!
Post-Draft: Pace cuts Leno. Response: WTF!!! No team ever starts a rookie at LT!! The OL is too young!
Play the rookies. Play them from day 1. See what they have and if they can do it.
In the end we just have to trust that the Bears (especially Juan Castillo) know what they are doing. I think the only surprise for me was not that they parted ways with Leno, but that they did so now. I get the fan mindset to just draft the guys like Fields, and the two new OL and start them day-1. The "toss 'em in and let them sink or swim" approach. But I can also see the benefit to being a bit more cautious with these 3 guys. I thought that they might play it safe this year and keep Leno (yes an average LT) one more year and let Jenkins play RT for a year and then move him to LT, like they did with Leno when he was drafted. But granted, Jenkins has a lot more talent coming out of college than Leno.
It's not unusual for an OL to need a BIT of development... for that matter QBs also. But the world probably won't end if they are stared day-1 whether they are ready to start or not. It's on-the-job learning. That can work too.
But in the end. I think we just have to trust the coaches in all of this. When they feel these 3 young guys are ready to start, then start them. Fields too. They will either sink or swim. It's not like we haven't ever seen players fail here on the Bears before. I get it, that Leno was expensive to keep. Maybe that forced their hand here.
In the end, I am just hoping the OL can be good this year. Protect the QB. Provide a run game. Even Mahomes looked bad in that Super Bowl when he didn't have decent OL blocking when 2 of his starters were out, and the two guys replacing them could not block well. The Bears seem confident that this OL can get it done this year. I hope they are right.

Point is, it's not common for teams to turnover both starting OT spots in one offseason. And a lot of people are questioning why Graham was kept over Leno for one more year. Right now, depth at OT is paper thin. Borom is a 5th round rookie and Wilkerson is a journeyman backup.
Ifedi--boy oh boy you love to harp on this--WAS A 1st RD PICK by Seattle originally as an OT. He struggled there (admittedly, Russell Wilson is a tough QB to pass protect for) and was moved to RG. Now apparently he's moving back to RT. I'd be very surprised if Borom beats him out as Ifedi did look pretty solid late last season at RT. Let's hope that wasn't a fluke last few games of last season.
Daniels was tried at C and he sucked at it. He was much better as a G. Whitehair is too. Based on what we know now, the starting 5 should be:
