Maybe the Bears will just roll with Foles as the 3rd string QB this year and pay the money.
They've already paid him. Signing bonus and roster bonus. He takes up a roster spot though and sounds like we are stuck with him.
It's hard to overstate what a clusterf**k the Trubisky miss was. So many sunk-cost snowball effects down the road.
This one is gonna make Ric very, very mad...
The Trubs miss did hurt, bigtime. I'm over it though (LOL, but it was tough to get over it, I'll confess that).
I try to see some glimmer of "positive" in where we are at right now with Foles. There is one tiny glimmer of positive. That is the fact that this QB room has two good vet QBs to help Justin Fields this year. No, you wouldn't do this intentionally. No, you don't need 2 veterans like this to mentor a rookie QB. But since this is the reality of our situation, I'm accepting it is what it is. Both Andy and Nick seem like really good guys but they have limited talent. If Field is a sponge, soaking up knowledge from them, it will help him transition to this league. Those two can help him learn to do so many things required of a good QB. They do have this knowledge (all the many things that make a QB successful at the NFL level) but they don't have Fields raw physical talent. You need both to be successful as an NFL franchise QB.
As we all know, the learning curve transitioning from college QB to NFL quarterback is so steep that most drafted QBs fail. Even top picks of an entire draft class fail. Heisman Trophy winning QBs fail. Fields can use all the help he can get to NOT fail.
So, yeah, it's not what you would choose as a best case scenario, but there are worse things than this situation. Next year the Bears can adjust the QB room to where it needs to be. For now this is where we are at for 2021 I guess.
Honestly, is this really surprising? The entire league saw was Foles was able to do last year, which wasn't a lot. Who would trade for him?
He's a decent but very expensive backup.
not just that, but that whole good guy great teammate thing went to shit as he started fighting w/the coach in game and on the sidelines and in interviews. He wasn't wrong, but you don't need a backup, or even bridge starter that acts like that.

To be fair, Foles had no chance most of his games last year. First of all, Nagy's play-calling and game management were truly awful (remember that fight NF and him had on the sidelines on national TV?). Secondly and most important, the Bears OL was atrocious in the mid-season, particularly on the interior. Consistent pressure up the middle will disrupt even the best QBs, particularly those like Foles that aren't exactly speedy. Go back and look at the rare games when Brees and Brady really struggled and you will often see pressure up the middle as the main reason. That's why for many years New Orleans prioritized the interior OL over the OTs--to keep an immobile Brees clean in the pocket.
Foles had really no chance during the losing streak last year. He has shown what he can do with a clean pocket and a friendly system.
A) He is NOT "expensive". I have pointed that out here multiple times and posted his contract. That is false. His cost is actually below average for a vet QB2. B) As a backup/mentor for a young starter, he is an ideal fit and has value. C) He needs a stout OL, particularly on the interior, to have a chance though
There's only a handful of teams that need a vet QB2 right now and my guess is that they are taking a wait-and-see attitude knowing there's a chance Foles could get released. Hate to say it, but we may need a team to have a QB injury in camp or preseason to be able to swing a deal.

Yeah, he was frustrated and could have (should have) handled it better. I think the 2020 season was just a season that the wheels came off on offense. There were games I would have liked to punch Nagy myself. He frustrated me to the max these past two seasons. Hopefully it all settles down this upcoming season and people get their act together on offense. Foles is definitely not needed here. But he may be here whether we like it or not. It was a bad signing by Pace. But it's done.
Foles might not get moved until PS/TC. Personally, I'd cut him and take the hit if I couldn't move him. Its a direct result of the Mitch pick not working out. Did it have to be done...I don't know.
I'd like to see Dalton/Fields/PS Developmental QB (not Bray 2.0).
