PFF grades Bears draft as A+ (yeah I know it's PFF)

Ric is probably right that Pace was just naïve and inexperienced his first few years and made a lot of dumb choices as a result (emotion > logic).  It really sucks to sit through "learning on the job" but I guess that's the price you pay for going with a young GM.

In 2015-2017, you'll notice Pace drafted a lot of projects and he got suckered in by athleticism over actual football production on tape too often.  He also seemed to foolishly discount the fact that small school prospects play against MUCH LOWER college competition so the bar to draft one of them has to be made way higher.


Kevin White was a PROJECT.  He was a track star, Jr. College-transfer with 1 yr of major college football experience and a very limited route repertoire.  Yes, he got hurt and that was unforeseeable but man you just don't draft a WR at #7 overall just cuz he runs fast in a straight line.
Grasu was a PROJECT in that he was known in advance to be undersized/understrength for an NFL O-Lineman.  It was hoped he could develop that but never did.  OK pick maybe in the 6th; not a good choice high in the 3rd.
Langford was a guy Pace fell in love with cuz of his open field speed (I agree, he was fast).  Pace apparently never watched his tape though cuz the guy was easily tackled by a tall blade of grass and rarely got to the open field in the NFL

[Result:  All 3 of these 2015 picks washed out of the NFL within 4 years]

Trubisky was a huge PROJECT who also had only 1 year of college production and previously couldn't beat out a teammate who went on to not get drafted at all.  I'll cut him some slack cuz QB picks are tough but Pace's plan was for him to sit a year behind Mike Glennon too...woof
Adam Shaheen...sweet lord...how drunk was Ryan Pace when he made this pick?  A 2nd rounder for a guy who played his college ball against accounting majors at a tiny school no one ever heard of before.  Yeeeeesh, that was awful.
Jordan Morgan was another weird reach from Kutztown State.  There were no OL prospects left on the board from a major football program in the 5th round that year?

[Result:  Morgan bounced around a while as a backup then retired, Trubisky and Shaheen are both fighting this year to make a bottom-of-the-depth chart roster spot]

Right,and aren't all of those things seemingly elementary things? It wasn't as if he was a complete green horn let alone seeing blatant deficiencies and not addressing them in some form.
