If you have a QB that you have conviction on being a franchise QB then you do what you have to do to get him. Its that simple. Nobody will care about future first round picks if the guy you traded up to get is a franchise QB...something this team hasn't had in damn near 40 years...maybe more.

Absolutely. Kudos to Pace and this coaching staff. I think we may finally have the QB monkey off our back now.
You are right. I would never have guessed Fields would get out of the top-10. Thought San Fran was taking him at #3 for sure.
--------- This is great. The GMF folks thought Fields would go to the 49ers. I'd say he is as good or better prospect than Lance. I like the deal, too. We get to keep our second and third round picks this year and next year. Should be able to work with that.
There are plenty of good OT still on the board. We should not have a problem getting an OT in the second round. Then a CB in the third round if a decent one is still on the board. I also still have my eye on Meinerz in third round.

QBs, WRs, and CBs got picked over in the 1st round (speaks volumes about how the NFL has evolved). There were a number of stupid--Shea McClellin level of stupid--picks as well.
OT was surprisingly not hit that hard. OT really needs to be Bears next pick. Radunz, Eichenberg, Mayfield, Christensen, etc. If Pace can trade down a little into the late-2nd and recoup a 4th or 5th round pick, that would be ideal.

I was just thinking back, and most of the mocks missed this. For example, I don't think I saw one with Darrisaw taken as late as he was. Gruden is nuts to take Leatherwood in first round, and he could have traded down and still got him anywhere in first round, but that's another story. Anyway, this just shows us how much GMs now value QB, WR, and CB much higher than OT. Even Jenkins is going in the second round. I wouldn't mind doubling down and taking OL in both second and third to really beef up the OL, especially if all the desirable CBs and WRs are gone in the top 50. I was surprised the Packers took a CB with Elijah Moore still on the board -- just proves the point again.

Me too. I even placed a bet they would take him because the odds were so good and the fit made so much sense to me that I thought I was stealing money at +900...glad they didn't.

Fields is a better football player RIGHT NOW. Lance has a super high ceiling, and I think he has a good chance of achieving it, but we know more about Fields, and his ceiling is just as high IMO. He's a safer Lance to me.

Thats the thing, I don't think their ceilings are that far off to ignore the risk of Lance; he's the first qb taken since the 60's to get drafted in rd 1 w/so few throws in college, and he wasn't even an FBS player, a big step down in competition.Competition doesn't always matter, Romo proved that, but he wasn't a first rd pick w/the pressure of having to start. Doesn't change the fact that Lance might have a high ceiling, but he also has a crazed preppers bunker of a floor.

I was thinking about this, this morning, Ric. Justin Fields has faced the very best-of-the-best teams as a starting quarterback. He has 34 games of experience in big games. He totally out-played Trevor Lawrence when Ohio State curb stomped Clemson this past season, making it to the national championship game. He has been on the big stage as a player, and also in the glare of the sports media pressure. Chicago sports brings intense pressure on a QB, but I think Fields has the experience to step into the role here as the face of the franchise - and to handle that pressure well.
Here's the cool thing. He has the experience starting against the best defenses, and also achieved a career passer rating of 178.8 passer rating while doing so (LINK). He passed for 67 TDs with only 9 ints against the best defenses in college ball. I've gotta believe that experience achieving great things against the best-of-the-best, makes him a significantly better gamble than a guy like Lance. Or Trubisky. It doesn't mean Fields will make it in the NFL but it sure means the odds are better for him to make it, versus a kid who has minimal experience. Or experience against lessor competition.
That experience factor with Fields is a very good thing. On and off the field.

Thats another great point JABF. One of the big things I like about Watson when he came out was his performance in big games...he showed up and balled out. He willed his team to victory. Fields is the same. Big moments didn't scare him...he shined in them! Thats important to me. Thats the difference between a DUDE and a JAG.
