======== Aren't you the guy who told me that Farley's back surgery was not so serious as to drop him off our board? But I read that he has had that surgery twice. By all accounts, he can become a real shutdown corner if healthy. On the other hand, Newsome is very solid himself without the health issue. If they are both off the board, then I am taking Bateman in the first round and Mond in the second, and best tackle available in third. We need Washington to take Mills ahead of us in the second round. That is maybe the only way it could work.
I just ran one and got Bateman(1), Walker Little(2), and Mond(3). I got A- grades for all those picks. I would be real happy with this result, but it does not seem likely. I think NFL GMs have a different evaluation on a lot of guys compared to where they rank on the simulator.
The surgery he had recently is not a huge deal. It's a common outpatient procedure that by itself I wouldn't expect to be a long term problem. But, I also heard recently on NFL radio that he has also had a prior ACL tear and missed substantial time due to groin strains (don't know about 2nd back surgery--please provide info if you have it). So it adds up now as a significant injury/availability concern that goes beyond a single microdiskectomy procedure. I would guess that's why he's gone from surefire 1st rounder to a player who may fall into the 2nd. Pace took a chance on a CB last year with some injury issues (JJ); dunno if he's willing to risk it twice.
Reason I said that mock was ideal was the 1st round trade-down that netted us an additional 3rd round pick--that would be perfect. Not sure if we can find a partner for a deal like that.
Okay so going off the idea of the Bears trading WAY up; and Atl accepting trades it is at least possible. It seems like a good trade for the Bears, but it is in fact in favor of Atl by 300 pts. I also traded out of the 3rd w/Houston(they offered) I got a 4th and 5th pick to help absorb the 2nd rd lost pick, and got a 4th next year to help absord that other 2nd lost pick. It hurts but not as much as before; besides this is where Pace is at his best, mid rounders.
traded 2021 1st and 2nd, and 2022 1st and 2nd to get the 4th pick
4 Justin Fields, O-H-I-O QB. Bears were seen at his pro-day, which likely means they aren't that interested, or maybe they've grown out of the cloak/dagger thing. Either way he's, Lawrence and Wilson are the only 3 prospects that actually should be top 10; and Fields probably shouldn't be top 5, but it is what it is. Bears, just like w/Glennon, have drafted the future; Dalton can likely last longer then 4 games, and if they keep Foles it's possible they'll be able to sit him an entire year. Either way if they like the idea of Russ Will from Sea, this guy sounds a lot like him. He stays in the pocket and can make all the throws, but if he needs to he can run and has good legs/athleticsm to hurt teams.
109 Cameron McGrone Michigan ILB Should find the field sooner then later next to Smith, but until he does Danny T and Christian Jones are there to assist Smith.
147 Cam Sample Tulane Edge not going to see a ton of field time this year, he needs to add weight and mass, but after a yr in the Bears program he should be able to replace Quinn.
164 Tommy Doyle OH Miami OH not a day one, or year one starter, but if he develops is going to be able to start on either side at OT.
204 Frank Darby AZ St WR Slot WR w/good size and hands and above average speed.
208 Avery Williams Boise St CB Slot/sub package CB, they'll need to find their pairing partner for Johnson next year and will have to hope the FA's and depth guys figure it out.
221 Mustafa Johnson Colorado DT. Bears like big boys late and see if they can develop them, this could be one of them
228 John Ball Marshal OT. ^See Above.
Fields fell, REALLY FELL, and the Bears got it for a lot less, but of the 3 qb's that the Bears could get, this one the guy I wanted them to get. So glad they didn't stand pat and end up w/someone like Mond or Mills. Difference between the 2 trades was a 5th instead of 2nd rd pick.

For Fields to fall as far as he did a bunch of things had to happen that all happened:
1) San Fran had to eff up. Shanny is a QB-guru no question so there's that but to give up 3 FRPs+ to get a guy who has thrown only 200 college passes against low-level competition and played only 1 game in a year and a half is a really, really risky move. Classic "I'm the smartest guy in the room" type of thing. This one pick will either cement Lynch as a genius or get him fired. Boom-orBust
2) Atlanta, Detroit, Carolina, Denver, and Philly ALL HAD TO PASS on taking a QB.
3) Washington and New England had to not jump up ahead or outbid Chicago
That was threading the needle there. Maybe a one-in-hundred chance all of those things fall into place. That's the reason I didn't look into Fields too seriously pre-draft--I though we had no realistic shot at him and he wouldn't get out of the top-6 or so.
