tl:dr:: Summary--brasil makes another plea for the Bears to make a move toward Watson.
------------------------------------------------------
I'm of the opinion that Watson would take us to the promised land. RB and TE are set (Cohen comes back), and OL is improving. Need to add WR and depth across the board. This can be done using day 2 and day 3 picks + FA. New DC should return to Fangio's scheme and although we don't know if the new guy is up to the task, can't be worse than the end of Pagano's tenure.
If an elite QB is the key to sustained winning in the NFL and IF Watson would come to Chicago and IF Houston would take Chicago's trade package, I'd do a deal in a heartbeat. We hear all the time on this board that RB/WR/TE/C/G/RT can all be drafted later in the draft and shouldn't be first-rounders (the old positional value argument). On DEF DT/ILB/S/CB can be picked up later as well. These are the current positions the Bears need depth and/or starters at. Mack and Quinn are here next year at least, Smith/Jackson/Johnson/Fuller/Goldman/Nichols are 6 pieces you can build around on DEF. Maybe Hicks can bring a draft pick or two in a trade.
If this draft is as deep as they claim at OT (which again, its always deep at some position am I right?) take an OT in the second and let Leno/Massie/Ifedi/Rookie fight it out. Massie draws the short straw IMO and is cut. Rookie-Whitehair-Mustipher-Daniels-Leno with Bars and Ifedi as swing G and T, or swap the rookie and Ifedi (who still needs to resign I believe.
Unless Robinson is resigned, WR is a cesspool behind Mooney+?+?+?+?. Take a WR late and do a dumpster dive in FA. Has to be better than the Bellamy+Wheaton years right? Maybe if Watson starts a QB, Robinsons returns on a team friendly deal (who knows--leave me to my fantasies people.)
This is a QB driven league like never before. Even some posters here are starting to recognize that. If you can add Watson (and all this might be impossible under CAP restraints) you do it.
If the Bears add Watson they become a perennial playoff team, one of the top 8 teams in the NFC and can legitimately challenge GB for division titles. They will finish with more wins and playoff games than Houston will with the Bears draft picks. They will have a 25 year old elite QB.
I'll say it again. We as a fan base are so beaten down by the years of failure at QB that we are scared to think big. "All we want is a QB we can win with" seems to be the motto of so many fans. We are afraid to trade for a QB because Cutler (although that was a different era, different team, different GM, different etc etc) and don't want to draft one until everything is ready, but we don't understand that if you fix everything except QB you are still drafting in the high teens because your teams isn't bad, you just lack a QB. So the Bears go 8-8ish without a QB and can't draft one because they are drafting 18th every year.
I count 3+ 'ifs' listed above. But the 'ifs' are still there if you try to draft one and use your first rounders to team build.
