So, if we can’t get Lance, do we take Jones or Trask at #20 or just go for “best available athlete” and try for QB next year with a new GM and head coach? I cannot decide — can make a case for either choice.
I say why not start now. If Jones or Trask is there? I would grab of one. At least we tried.
I don't start researching the specifics of this stuff until after the Combine every year but yeah....DRAFT A FREAKIN' QB WITHOUT FAIL THIS YEAR.
Mac Jones did look solid in the NCAA Champ game and I'd have no problem spending a 1st on him.

Jones is not high on most of the mock drafts -- arm strength and mobility is quite a bit less than the top 4. Right now, I am withholding my vote until we can see what other players are still on the board at 20. Anyway, it is probably a moot point because Pace will more likely just bring in a veteran QB instead of taking a shot in the draft. I doubt it will be Stafford, as the Lions will prefer to move him out of the division. No sense helping the Bears solve their problem with a QB who could come back and bite them.

Latest Big Board I saw listed him around #45 or so. Which means he's got a good shot to go 1st round since QBs get pushed up.

According to Jahns, one option is to use Foles as a bridge QB and draft one high. He quotes Brad Spielburger from OTC as saying Foles contract makes it a strong possibility that can't be discarded. That is absolute vomit if that happens because it practically ensures another season stuck in mediocracy or losing. Why the hell would you retain Nagy/Pace then?

I honestly believe the Bears have already written off 2021 at the McCaskey/Phillips level. I do. The money situation is of primary importance to the M family. I have to think they are going to pay this year's salaries to Pace/Nagy and revisit this for 2022 when it will be more affordable to do so. GM/HC money doesn't affect the cap obviously but it hits the family's pocket book. Regarding Foles, Pace gave the guy a contract that makes it too costly to eat his contract in 2021, so Foles is our guy.
Could it work out that Nagy proves this season to being a great coach and Pace to be a great GM? Yeah, but it's a long shot. I don't think we have a "bad" GM and HC. But I also think they are not the people to win a super bowl here and a culture of sustained winning (defined by deep playoff runs). If others believe otherwise, hey, they very well could be right. I may be wrong.
Yeah, buckle up for a year of Foles at QB. That won't be our only problem in 2021. But I do believe the Bears will figure out how to deliver the usual mediocre team and season.
Pace will try to trade up to get a QB in the draft, but so will other teams like SF who are in win now mode. So, if the top 5 qb,s are gone before the Bears pick at #20, would Pace still draft a qb, or just go with the best FA qb he can get? Of course, he could double down and do both.

I’d hate to see us burn a bunch of cash on a FA. If we’re going to take a flyer in FA then take one on a player like Pittsburgh just did. Young, potentially good but with some issues. A strong coaching staff (assuming we have one) can hopefully coach him up. If it works that’s a win and if not, it didn’t cost us a bunch. I still believe we have to draft one...
